The appearance of Lord Rama is celebrated as Ramnavmi. Ramnavmi falls on the ninth day of waxing fortnight of the month of Chaitra. In Treta-yuga, the Supreme Lord appeared as son of King Dasharath as Lord Ramachandra. Although he appeared as a man out of kindness to His devotees, along with His brother Lakshman, He is the Supreme Lord.

The celebrations at the temple included shobha yatra (an assembly of devotees performing kirtan while carrying a palanquin of Lord Rama) on Juhu beach followed by darshan of the Deities in their newly designed outfits, Kalash abhishek performed by more than 200 accomplished citizens of Mumbai, maha-abhishek and arati.

The special highlight of the festivities was the Dhwaja Aarohan (flag hoisting) ceremony. The Bombay Fire Brigade’s “extendable pulley system ladder” vehicle, a “Volvo” truck, which was hired by the temple, was put to action to carry devotees and well-wishers to the temple domes. The vehicle carried devotees in three batches to all the three altars namely Sri Sri Gaur Nitai, Sri Sri Radha Rasabihari and Sri Sri Sita Ramn Laxman to hoist the flags. After reaching the respective domes, devotees offered ghee and camphor lamps to the chakra and tied a decorative red flag bearing the symbol of Sri Garuda, who is the eternal carrier of Lord Vishnu.

After witnessing the extraordinary flag hoisting ceremony, devotees and well-wishers proceeded to temple courtyard which was filled with blue water and sprinkled with lotus flowers to participate in the boat festival. Senior devotees including HH Bhakti Caru Swami and HH Navayogendra Swami set in motion a beautifully decorated silver boat which carried the utsav-murti of Sri Sri Sita Rama. Laddus and banana prasad was distributed to all devotees witnessing the boat festival.

An exclusive invitation was forwarded to more than 30,000 ISKCON Life Members and extensive darshan and prasad arrangements were made for their convenience. More than 1,00,000 citizens of Mumbai witnessed the Ramnavami celebrations at ISKCON Juhu and everyone who visited the temple was offered prasad.

By Parijata devi dasi

On 24 March 2010, devotees and well-wishers at ISKCON Juhu celebrated Ramnavami.
