By Brijbasi das<\/strong><\/p>\n In 1895 Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura published in his \u201cSajjana-tosani\u201d selected verses from \u201c\u015ar\u012b Prapann\u0101m\u1e5bta\u201d, a 12th century book by Sri Ananta Acarya, son of the great Kuresa, famous disciple and chief associate of Srila Ramanujacarya. The book contains valuable information and biographical accounts of the great founders of the Sri-sampradaya \u2013 Nathamuni, Yamunacarya and Ramanuja. It is stated in \u201cPrapann\u0101m\u1e5bta\u201d in relation to Ramanujacarya\u2019s birth:<\/p>\n caitre me\u1e63e \u015bukla-pak\u1e63e pa\u00f1camy\u0101\u1e41 guru-v\u0101sare | \u201c[Ramanuja was born] on the fifth day of the waxing moon during Caitra month [March-April], on Thursday, at noon when Cancer was the ascendant and the Moon was in Ardra-naksatra.\u201d (Sri Prapannamrta, 2.25).<\/p>\n Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu Himself states the following in \u201cNavadvipa-dhama-mahatmya\u201d (16.54):<\/p>\n \u201cFrom Ramanuja I take two essential principles \u2013 unalloyed devotion and service to the devotees of the Lord.\u201d<\/p>\n To provide some knowledge of the Sri-sampradaya to the residents of Bengal Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura translated some verses from the section of \u201cPrapannamrta\u201d where Ramanuja instructs his followers and then published them in his \u201cSajjana-tosani\u201d (Vol.7, numbers 3 and 4, June-July 1895) under a title \u201cRamanuja Swamir Upadesh\u201d, \u201cInstructions of Ramanuja Swami\u201d. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur quoted some of these verses in his book \u201cBrahmana and Vai\u1e63\u1e47ava\u201d. We present here some of his instructions with the English translation of Bhaktivinoda Thakura\u2019s Bengali translation-cum-explanation.<\/p>\n y\u0101 pr\u012btir \u0101s\u012bt satata\u1e41 bhagavan-n\u0101ma-k\u012brtane | As you had an affection for chanting the Lord\u2019s holy names, may you have the same affection for chanting the names of His devotees.<\/p>\n k\u0101ra\u1e47a\u1e41 bhagavat-pr\u0101pter mah\u0101-bh\u0101gavat\u0101\u015braya\u1e25 | Having realized that the only cause of attaining the Lord is the shelter of the great devotees you should always remain under their guidance.<\/p>\n vih\u0101ya vi\u1e63\u1e47u-kai\u1e45karya\u1e41 kai\u1e45karya\u1e41 vai\u1e63\u1e47avasya ca | vai\u1e63\u1e47av\u0101n\u0101m anu\u1e63\u1e6dh\u0101ne nop\u0101ya matim unnayet | A wise person should never consider service to Vai\u1e63\u1e47avas as a method (up\u0101ya), but should always consider it to be the goal (upeya). A method-attitude (up\u0101ya-buddhi) is when we think that we achieve some other result by serving Vai\u1e63\u1e47avas. But when we think that Vai\u1e63\u1e47ava-sev\u0101 becomes possible only after performing many other pious activities \u2013 such attitude is called \u201cgoal-attitude\u201d (upeya-buddhi).<\/p>\n n\u0101h\u016byed eka-vacan\u0101n mah\u0101bh\u0101gavat\u0101n jan\u0101n | If one needs to call great Vai\u1e63\u1e47avas he should not use singular number, which denotes disrespect, but instead he should use plural number denoting respect. When one sees a Vai\u1e63\u1e47ava he should immediately fold his hands with respect.<\/p>\n harer bhagavato vi\u1e63\u1e47or vai\u1e63\u1e47av\u0101n\u0101\u1e41 ca sannidhau || One should not sit near Lord Vi\u1e63\u1e47u or pure Vai\u1e63\u1e47avas with one\u2019s legs spread before them.<\/p>\n vai\u1e63\u1e47av\u0101gamana\u1e41 \u015brutv\u0101 gacched abhimukha\u1e41 tad\u0101 | When one hears that a Vai\u1e63\u1e47ava is coming one should walk some distance to meet him. When a Vai\u1e63\u1e47ava departs one should walk some distance along with him.<\/p>\n \u015br\u012b-vai\u1e63\u1e47av\u0101n\u0101\u1e41 sarve\u1e63\u0101\u1e41 deha-ch\u0101y\u0101 na la\u1e45ghayet | One should not step over the shadow from the Vai\u1e63\u1e47avas\u2019 body. Also one should not make other Vai\u1e63\u1e47avas touch one\u2019s own shadow.<\/p>\n yadi pra\u1e47amate p\u016brva\u1e41 d\u0101so\u2019ha\u1e41 iti vai\u1e63\u1e47ava\u1e25 | One commits a great offense by disrespecting a Vai\u1e63\u1e47ava who, considering himself a servant, offers his respects first.<\/p>\n vai\u1e63\u1e47av\u0101n\u0101\u1e41 ca janm\u0101ni nidr\u0101lasy\u0101ni y\u0101ni ca | Vai\u1e63\u1e47avas\u2019 birth, sleep and laziness are not to be disclosed to others. If one sees them one should not tell others anything about them. Quickly giving up their faults one should glorify their good qualities.<\/p>\n vi\u1e63\u1e47u-p\u0101dodaka\u1e41 caiva bhakta-p\u0101dodakan tu v\u0101 | One should not drink the great water that washed the lotus feet of Lord Vi\u1e63\u1e47u or of His devotees while being looked upon by materialistic people.<\/p>\n tattva-trayasya j\u00f1\u0101nena \u015br\u012b-rahasya-trayasya ca | One should never drink the water that washed the feet of a person who is devoid of knowledge of the three tattvas and three rahasyas. Three tattvas are cit (living entities), acit (matter) and \u012a\u015bvara (God). Bhagav\u0101n is one non-dual entity and this non-dual entity possesses two vi\u015be\u1e63as (attributes) \u2013 cit and acit. Even if a person devoid of this knowledge has undergone five sa\u1e41sk\u0101ras, still one should not accept the water from his feet.<\/p>\n j\u00f1\u0101n\u0101nu\u1e63\u1e6dh\u0101na-yuktasya sad\u0101c\u0101ra-ratasya ca | One should endeavor to always drink the water from the feet of the Vai\u1e63\u1e47avas who possess proper knowledge, in other words the knowledge of artha-pancaka and three tattvas, and is devoted to following proper behavior (sad\u0101cara-rata).<\/p>\n m\u0101\u1e41 ca bh\u0101gavatai\u1e25 s\u0101rddha\u1e41 s\u0101mya-buddhi\u1e41 na k\u0101rayet | One should not consider oneself equal to Vai\u1e63\u1e47avas. As soon as one accidentally touches a materialist one should immediately take bath with one\u2019s cloth on and then drink Vai\u1e63\u1e47ava-cara\u1e47\u0101m\u1e5bta.<\/p>\n na gr\u0101hayed vi\u1e63\u1e47u-t\u012brtha\u1e41 pr\u0101k\u1e5bt\u0101n\u0101\u1e41 g\u1e5bhe\u1e63u ca | One should not accept cara\u1e47\u0101m\u1e5bta from the \u015b\u0101lagr\u0101ma-\u015bil\u0101 situated in the house of materialistic people. One should not serve the Deity of Lord Vi\u1e63\u1e47u situated in the house of materialistic people.<\/p>\n \u015br\u012b-harer-divya-de\u015be\u1e63u pa\u015byatsu pr\u0101k\u1e5bte\u1e63v api | One should accept pras\u0101dam from the Lord\u2019s holy places even while being looked upon by materialistic persons residing in those places. One should not have any doubts about this.<\/p>\n yadi \u015bri-vai\u1e63\u1e47avair datta\u1e41 pras\u0101da\u1e41 vi\u1e63\u1e47u-sannidhau | If a Vai\u1e63\u1e47ava gives you some pras\u0101dam in front of Lord Vi\u1e63\u1e47u you should not refuse it saying \u201cI\u2019m fasting\u201d.<\/p>\n sannidhau vai\u1e63\u1e47av\u0101n\u0101\u1e41 ca sva-gu\u1e47\u0101n naiva k\u012brtayet | One should not sing one\u2019s own glories in front of the Vai\u1e63\u1e47avas and one should not criticize anyone in front of the Vai\u1e63\u1e47avas.<\/p>\n dinaika gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101y\u0101\u1e41 ca var\u1e47ayed guru-sad-gu\u1e47\u0101n | Every day one should faithfully glorify the good qualities of one\u2019s guru for half an hour. One should certainly devote half an hour every day for glorifying the pastimes of of Sathakopa and other great Acaryas or one\u2019s own guru\u2019s pastimes.<\/p>\n deh\u0101bhim\u0101nin\u0101 s\u0101rdha\u1e41 saha-v\u0101sa\u1e41 na k\u0101rayet |<\/p>\n One should not live together with a person who identifies himself with his body.<\/p>\n \u015br\u012b-vai\u1e63\u1e47av\u0101n\u0101\u1e41 cihn\u0101ni dh\u1e5btv\u0101pi vi\u1e63ay\u0101turai\u1e25 | If cheaters attached to sense gratification wear Vai\u1e63\u1e47ava signs still one should not live together with them.<\/p>\n sva-deha-priya-bhogy\u0101ni n\u0101rpayet param\u0101tmane | One should not offer to the Supreme Lord those kinds of food and other items which are pleasing to one\u2019s own body. One should offer to Lord Vi\u1e63\u1e47u those items which are prescribed by \u015b\u0101stra.<\/p>\n \u015br\u012bmad bh\u0101gavat\u0101rcana\u1e41 bhagavata\u1e25 p\u016bj\u0101-vidher uttamam | The highest rule in worshiping the Lord is worship of His devotees. Neglecting Vai\u1e63\u1e47avas is more dangerous than disrespecting Lord Vi\u1e63\u1e47u. The water from the feet of Vai\u1e63\u1e47avas is greater than water from the feet of Lord Vi\u1e63\u1e47u.
