What is that happiness? -That happiness is the taste derived from having a loving relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Why don’t we experience this? Our lack of experience is due to a lack of purification. How can we experience this? We can experience it through the practice or science of bhakti yoga.

Happiness is a relative term and varies from person to person. When we feel unhappy, when we feel we are lacking something in our life, we try to fix this with some kind of gratification. After we do this, we feel guilty because we know we didn’t need to do it or shouldn’t have done it. This then creates a vicious cycle and the cycle continues like a treadmill of endless unfulfilled desires. So, how do we deal with this?

Acknowledge that what belongs to us now, did belong to someone else in past and will belong to someone else in the future. Do not let happiness be based on our temporary proprietorship on material possessions. Acknowledge that neither Krsna nor Prabhupada want us to suffer, that we do not want to suffer either, and that Krsna wants us to be happy. What does Krsna say in Bhagavat-gita about happiness?

One must come to know that his real happiness is in experiencing the pleasure of his transcendental senses, not the material senses. Senses are not to be sacrificed, and desires are not to be sacrificed, but there are both desires and sense satisfaction in the spiritual sphere. Real happiness is transcendental to material, sensual experience. If one is not convinced of this, he will surely be agitated and will fall down. One should therefore know that the happiness he is trying to derive from material senses is not really happiness.

Even if one has some desires for material enjoyment, one engaged in the service of the Lord is never frustrated. He is endowed with the desired result of his worship. Example – Dhruva Maharaj.

Krishna states in the Bhagavad-gita 4.11” ye yatha mam prapadyante …” that He gives Himself to us in proportion to how much we give ourselves to Him. Therefore the only way to get Krishna is to give yourself fully to Krishna. He does not reveal Himself to those who are holding back anything from Him. After all why should He give Himself to you if you do not fully give yourself to Him?

If we pray to the Supreme Lord in every transaction of our material existence, everything will be done very nicely and just suitable to our heart’s desire. In other words, in all circumstances we must take shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and depend completely on His decision. The fulfillment of desires, therefore, should be entrusted to the Supreme Personality of Godhead; that is the nicest solution.

One should be satisfied with whatever he achieves by his previous destiny, for discontent can never bring happiness. A person who is not self-controlled will not be happy even with possessing the three worlds. Example – Hiranyakasyapu. He was a very powerful king and achieved proprietorship over the three worlds, but could not achieve satisfaction or find the end of his ambitions.

If happiness is the ultimate goal of life, one must be satisfied with the position in which he is placed by providence. This instruction is also given by Prahlada Maharaja.

So fill yourself up with Krsna consciousness. As Prabhupada says, if you love Krsna than you are loving yourself and you will be happy. So engaging in pure devotional service is truly the happiest thing you can possible do.

Krishna declares that Spiritual platform offers the supreme happiness (Bg. 6.20-23).
