Long long ago appeared a Lord’s devotee
Famous was he for his serving attitude and purity
Madhvendra Puri was his name
In his dream Lord Gopal came
“I am suffocated in jungle beneath
Please excavate so that I can breathe
To relief from this heat, bring sandalwood from Malaya hill
And smear it all over my body”-with him Lord shared his will
When Madhvendra got up from sleep
His desire to please the Lord was very deep
Headed towards Puri when he reached Gopinath temple
Twelve pots of kheer, in front of Deity Pujari did assemble
To taste the kheer was his little desire
For the same his Gopal can admire
He realized an offence he has been committing
By trying to think of tasting the Lord’s offering
Thinking this way, from Gopinath temple, he left
He chanted and chanted in a land bereft
At night, in the pujari’s dream the Lord appear
Asked him to steal the kheer for his devotee so dear
The Lord instructed to take to Madhvendra Puri
In all surprise and fear the Pujari did agree
Honoring by MadhvendraPuri the same kheer pot
With tears in his eyes, he realized the mercy of His Lord
He got up from his sleep the very next day
The news of Kheer Chor Gopinath was all along the way
The Pujari took him to Jagannath Puri’s king
37kilos of sandalwood the king did bring
By serving the devotee, the king got satisfied
In this way, everyone associated got deeply purified
Taking leave Madhvendra Puri set about his place
In a dream, he saw Lord Gopal’s beautiful face
Applying chandan to Gopinath or Me is same
It is nothing but a difference of mere name
To Gopinath MadhvendraPuri applied chandan
This is how the Chandan Yatra was begun
