by Administrator
Hare KrishnaBy Bhakti Brhat Bhagavata Swami

Today marks the anniversary of the Disappearance Day of Srila Madhavendra Puri. I will read the translation to the song that we just sung, Saparsada-bhagavad-viraha-janita-vilapa - Lamentation Due to Separation from the Lord and His Associates (from Prarthana) by Srila Narottam dasa Thakur.

Sri Madhavendra Puri’s Disappearance Day

by Administrator
By Giriraj Swami

Today is the disappearance day of Sri Madhavendra Puri, who appears in the line of disciplic succession as the grand spiritual master of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Madhavendra Puri’s disciple Isvara Puri was accepted by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu as His spiritual master. Sri Madhavendra Puri is very important for us, and today we shall read about his disappearance from Srila Prabhupada’s translation of Sri Caitanya-caritamrta, Antya-lila, Chapter Eight: “Ramacandra Puri Criticizes the Lord.”

Sanctimony in a Time of War

by Administrator
By Sankirtana Das

Sanctimony is not necessarily reserved for the righteous. It’s a condition that could affect anyone: the right wing, left wing, atheists, and even “the sinful.” It means “making a show of being morally superior to others.” We all fall into it at one time or other, sooner or later.

Active Listening

by Administrator
Hare KrishnaBy Bhurijana dasa

One fundamental requirement for active listening is the capacity to suspend the judging-propensity. Resist the temptation to immediately offer words of advice or throw out pat preachy lines. The general rule is to not advice unless you are quite sure the listener wishes to accept your words: “advice only when hired” is a saying used by professional counselors in this connection. Instructing one who is disturbed is usually not effective because the troubled person's turbulent mind will not al...

What is the purpose of our temples?

by Administrator
Hare KrishnaBy Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur

Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur Prabhupada speaks about proper mood for devotees towards the society's temples. It is more intelligent to create a living Matha rather than to build a Matha for comfortable living. Creating a living Matha means to attract faithful persons to surrender at the lotus feet of the spiritual master. The highest welfare activity is to attract living entities to serve the spiritual master’s lotus feet by describing to them the spiritual master’s glories and service. For this we spend gallons of blood. Such preachin...

Some Thoughts on Disciples in ISKCON

by Administrator
By Krishna dharma das

“One should learn how to associate with the devotees of the Lord by gathering with them to chant the glories of the Lord. This process is most purifying. As devotees thus develop their loving friendship, they feel mutual happiness and satisfaction. And by thus encouraging one another they are able to give up material sense gratification, which is the cause of all suffering. The devotees of the Lord constantly discuss the glories of the Personality of Godhead among themselves. Thus, they constantly remember the Lord and remind one another of His qualities and pastimes. In this way, b...

Sri Advaita Acharya

by Administrator
By Giriraj Swami

To honor Sri Advaita Acharya’s appearance day, we present Srila Prabhupada’s talk about him in Mayapur on April 6, 1975. So, try to follow the path of acharya process. Then life will be successful. And to become acharya is not very difficult. First of all, become a very faithful servant of your acharya: follow strictly what he says and try to please him and spread Krishna consciousness. That’s all. It is not at all difficult. Try to follow the instruction of your guru maharaja and spread Krishna consciousness. That is the order of Lord Chaitanya. Amara ajnaya guru hana tara’ ei desa...

Congregational Development In ISKCON

by Administrator
Hare KrishnaBy Kripamoya Dasa

Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu took sannyasa simply to reach out to those who would only take His messages seriously if He did so. The Six Goswamis of Vrindavan were known as the greatest philosophers, and yet they took the time and trouble to extract the essence from all the dharma sastras in order to convey a simple message to ordinary people. The result was that common people were able to follow their simplified teachings, and loved them for giving them Krsna. It is perhaps interesting to note that even though the Six Goswamis were usual...

A Successful Gamble

by Administrator
By Bhakti-lata Dasi

From time to time I send books to inmates who haven't contacted us. I never had a response but I still try once in a while. Back in February 2018, I saw a documentary entitled Death Row: Inside Indiana State Prison. One inmate, in particular, caught my attention. His tiny cell was packed with books and he had written thoughtful words on his walls, such as: Industry, Perseverance, Frugality. In this documentary he also said, "Those books allow for a great escape, to be able to leave the confines of the walls." It seemed to me that there was a great chance of him appreciating the Bhagava...

Some interesting thoughts from a friend of 40 years ago

by Administrator
Hare KrishnaBy Praghosa Dasa

While we may consider the Hare Krishnas a rather obscure group, the truth is their impact on the world we occupy today is massive. They are the ones who originally brought the likes of meditation, mindfulness and good diet to us all. So while it may generally be thought that the Hare Krishna movement has not taken the world by storm and achieved mass global domination, secretly their core teaching and activities have. This is shown wherever you look in society now, where you will witness Hare Krishna-isms everywhere, even if they might be a little on the diluted side. Inde...

Draupadi – dishonored yet honorable

by Administrator
Hare KrishnaBy Chaitanya Charan das

Draupadi. Her admirable character is revealed in the most humiliating incident of her life – her disrobing by the wicked Dushasana. Though victimized in body, she refuses to be victimized in her heart. Her exceptional character transforms the lowest point in her life into the highest point. The incident in which she is the most dishonored, she emerges as the most honorable. On that dark day, her period has just ended and she has emerged after bathing, wearing a single cloth before she puts on her royal dress as the chief queen of the reigning monarch. Unknown to ...

The Test for Best

by Administrator
Hare KrishnaBy Nikunja Vilasini Dasi

I grew up thinking that I had to be the best—in the classroom, in extramural activities, and in everything else—to be successful in life. Although I excelled in most of what l did and was at the top of my class, the unimaginable day came when a new boy joined my class, and I became second best. This was my first lesson in recognising that no matter how materially accomplished I may become, there will always be someone better, someone ahead, someone wiser an...

FIRM FAITH: A Bedrock for Progress in Bhakti

by Administrator
By Subhag Swami

Faith is not bhakti but is a very important part of bhakti. The Cambridge dictionary defines ‘faith’ as, "a great trust or confidence in something or someone." Śrīla Prabhupāda has explained that "faith means unflinching trust in something sublime" (Bhagavad-gītā 2.41, purport). He further explained, "Faith means firm conviction that if I become transcendentally engaged in the service of the Lord, then my life becomes successful. This is called faith. And that conviction must be firm, not tottering faith" (Initiation of Bali-mardana Dāsa -- Montreal, July 29, 1968).

Words of Transcendence

by Administrator
Hare KrishnaBy Radhanath Swami

When you advance in Krishna Consciousness, it is more difficult to tolerate being honored than to tolerate being dishonored. The world will appreciate you if you give time to Maya and devotees will appreciate you if you give time to Krishna. So you decide whom to serve. Fighting against Maya is a blissful thing in the world. For a non-devotee, Maya convinces not to surrender unto Krishna. But for a devotee, she convinces to postpone the surrender. The happiness of the material world also disturbs us because it makes us forget Krishna. There is enough happiness ...

The names of Krishna’s Personal Paraphernalia

by Administrator
By Srila Rupa Goswami

Krishna's mirror is named Saradindu and His fan is named Marumaruta. His toy lotus flower is named Sadasmera and His toy ball is named Citrakoraka. Krishna's golden bow is named Vilasakarmana. The two ends of this bow are studded with jewels and it has a bowstring named Manjulasara. His glistening jewel-handled scissors are named Tustida. His buffalo-horn bugle is named Mandraghosa and His flute is named Bhuvanamohini. Krishna has another flute named Mahananda, which is like a fishhook that captures the fish of Srimati Radharani's heart and mind. Another flute, which has six holes is...

Exploring Love

by Administrator
Hare KrishnaBy Vishakha Devi Dasi

True love is not casual but is an act of will that requires the lover’s concentration on and commitment to the beloved (in Sanskrit called asakta-manah — "mind attached"). In other words, love is about my beloved's—and not my own—thoughts, feelings, and desires. True love is selfless. One who would love is concerned with and alert to the beloved in every sphere of life. In fact, one who would love sees everything in relation to the beloved and sees the beloved everywhere. This does n...

Finding Perfect Joy – A Lesson from St. Francis

by Administrator
Hare KrishnaBy Radhanath Swami

In Italy, near the city of Perugia, is the place called Assisi, the birth place of a very popular saint named Francis. He was the son of a wealthy merchant, but he took up the life of renunciation. Committed to a life of self-imposed poverty, humility, and devotion, he attracted many to follow. “One day he was walking with one brother Leo from Perugia to a very famous temple, St. Maria of the Angel. He was walking for miles and miles, and it was freezing cold. It was raining and snowing. He asked his brother Leo, “I want you to write down whatever I say.” They were...

Srila Prabhupada as the Personification of Devotee Care

By ISKCON GBC Strategic Planning Team

“One day I became aware of the door being opened, and I turned to see Srila Prabhupada’s lotus feet walking into that closet room. . . . He placed his hand on my head and inquired, ‘Yamuna? How are you doing?’ Firstly I said, ‘I am always thinking of you, Srila Prabhupada.’ Then I explained my symptoms, and he said, ‘I think this is jaundice . . . Now I will take charge of your recovery. You will never get well in these conditions on the floor.’

Kanai Natashala: Where Sri Chaitanya’s Ecstasy Awakened

by Administrator
Hare KrishnaBy Sacinandana Swami

The devotees suggested to Chaitanya Mahaprabhu that He lead them in kirtana, and this is what He did. He started the sankirtana movement, which gave expression to His motto: “Where is Krishna? Where is Krishna?” In Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita (Antya-lila 17.60–61), this mood of Sri Chaitanya is revealed: “Alas! Where is Krishna, the treasure of My life? Where is the lotus-eyed one? Alas! Where is the divine ocean of all transcendental qualities? Alas! Where is the beautiful blackish yout...

Laulyam Lalasamayi

by Administrator
Hare KrishnaBy Mahatma das

Yes, association of the pure devotees and sadhus and chanting Hare Krishna are the most important practices. But the point is that if a sufficient level of intensity to become Krishna conscious is not there, no one would do the practice. Good food is healthy, but it’s only healthy if you can digest it. Our eagerness to be Krishna conscious is our digestive power. If one develops this laulyam, or excessive eagerness for meeting and serving the Lord in a particular way, that is the price to enter i...

The Road Ahead

by Administrator
Hare KrishnaBy Indra Krishna Dasa

I think of Lord Krishna’s answer to Brahma prayers: “O Brahma, whatever appears to be of any value, if it is without relation to Me, has no reality. Know it as My illusory energy, that reflection which appears to be in darkness.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 2.9.34) What is the relationship of all these things to the Lord, I wonder? Do these people at all believe in His omnipotence? Everything I see is the illusory energy of the Lord.

Finding Ultimate Meaning

by Administrator
Hare KrishnaBy Nikunja Vilasini Devi Dasi

Just as Narada had guided Dhruva, Srila Prabhupada encouraged people to serve God, thus delivering the remedy for their unsatisfied hearts. Whether they were full of material desires, just curious, or seeking genuine spiritual cultivation, the practice of bhakti-yoga – the means to rekindle one’s love for Krishna – gave them lasting happiness and satisfaction. Serious practitioners were able to give up their bad habits and addictions. Having received a valuable jewel, they lost...

What Prabhupada Wants

by Administrator
By Sankirtana Das

Prabhupada wrote and spoke millions and millions of words that are now accessible to anyone and everyone. Sometimes devotees quote a sentence or two from Prabhupada but don’t necessarily look to examine the context of what is being expressed. Were the words from a purport in one of his books? Is it a lecture, conversation, or a letter that is being quoted? Who were the words spoken to? What was Prabhupada’s intention in speaking the words? Were his words straightforward and obvious, or was there a deeper meaning? Or maybe it was both.

Srila Gopala Bhatta Gosvami’s Appearance Day

by Administrator
By Giriraj Swami

Sri Gopala Gosvami was the son of Venkata Bhatta, a resident of Sri Rangam. Gopala Bhatta formerly belonged to the disciplic succession of the Ramanuja-sampradaya but later became part of the Gaudiya-sampradaya. In the year 1433 Sakabda (A.D. 1511), when Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu was touring South India, He stayed for four months during the period of Caturmasya at the house of Venkata Bhatta, who then got the opportunity to serve the Lord to his heart’s content. Gopala Bhatta also got the opportunity to serve the Lord at this time. Sri Gopala Bhatta Gosvami was later initiated by his uncle...
