Latest update from Earthquake zone:
Parasuram das
Last Monday 21st February at 8pm an earthquake struck again. 6.4 magnitude.
The Earth rose up and down about one foot, buildings started to fall,
terrible noise. It was over very quickly. I doubt if there were many
casualties as most of the buildings around us are deserted or destroyed
already.
We were safe in the sports stadium which we share with 700 police and army
personnel.
We were given as much food as we needed by the government. So we are cooking
daily for the rescue workers, police and army plus 1,200 refugees who are
living in tents. Also making up food parcels and bottles of drinking water.
Busy time, nobody speaks English except ourselves but language is not
necessary when giving out essentials.
Very quickly we developed a strong bond with the police. They were away
from home in a dangerous place and so were we. They saw us raising early
and working hard and a true friendship arose. Religious differences had no
meaning we were a team on a mission. They just loved the Prasad and we made
sure to throw a feast at every opportunity.
I was talking to a local police officer today using google translator, his
family survived but his brother’s family are still under the rubble.
10,000 died in the city of Adyiman, the clock tower is permanently fixed on
4.17am, the time the first Earthquake struck. This is where the football
stadium became the rescue hub.
The Mayor and government officials are eager to continue our working
relationship. Friendships formed in the field of sacrifice are unbreakable
