International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every May 12, the
anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth.
The International Theme for this year is “Our Nurses. Our Future.”. This global campaign sets out what we want for nursing in the future in order to address
the global health challenges and improve global health for all.
The ‘Our Nurses, Our Future’ campaign will shine the light on nurses and on a
brighter future focusing on how the profession can help improve global health for
all will be at the centre of this year’s International Nurses Day.
The future in nursing depends a lot on nurses finding their purpose in nursing
and using that purpose in their nursing services to help improve global health.
There are many nurses who have yet to find their purpose in nursing. Every
nurse needs to use their career, knowledge and understanding of the science of
nursing and understand how it fits in the global world.
Devotee nurses are very fortunate as they are aware of that wider purpose
and how it benefits them as nurses, their patients and the whole global
healthcare system. When we know our purpose and surrender to the divine to
become instruments in this process then nursing becomes bhakti nursing. The process of bhakti yoga kicks in and we are no longer the doer. Once every nurse
can follow the path of bhakti nursing then we can safely look towards a
brighter future. Our care to our patients is further enhanced, with a
transcendental aspect. Likewise our relationship with each other at work is
infused with a higher purpose.”
The process of bhakti yoga in nursing softens the heart and removes jealousy,
hatred, lust, anger, egoism, pride, and arrogance. It instead infuses joy,
divine ecstasy, bliss, peace, and knowledge. It guides the practitioner to a
higher purpose.
Nursing is not a job. Real nursing is a surrendered practice training us in
bhakti yoga for a higher purpose. Through this practice we get an opportunity
to dive deep within ourselves. As we heal ourself in this process of bhakti
nursing , we are able to heal others around us. We can find deep connection and
love of God. We then start acting and behaving in a more loving , caring and
compassionate way. We see our colleagues and patients in a new light. We no
longer look towards caring for a person. We instead transform our care towards
caring for the human spirit. Our nursing job can thus be transformed into a
loving devotional service. Our Nurses. Our future.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the Nurses a very Happy
Nurses Day.
