Brief history of NATYA NECTAR

It was a clear, moon-lit evening on September 10, 2006 in Delhi and I was feeling elated! After a long week of practicing my routine, my audition had been judged and I was formally accepted as a freshman in the prestigious Indian Classical Arts Academy, Sri Ram Bharatiya Kala Kendra.

My long-term cherished goal was to achieve the 4 year KATHAK dance degree and one day perform the Pastimes of Krsna all over India. I had been dancing in America since I was 3, yet when I turned 17, I fell in love with Kathak Classical dance. In the last 8 years that I’ve lived and worked in India, I have felt like I have the body of an American but my heart is in India.

I worked diligently at many kinds of jobs in America to save up funds for going to India to pursue my dream as a Kathak dancer and also received a 2 year Dance and Health degree at Santa Fe Community College in Florida. My mata was working 2 jobs as a single mother to take care of my sister and I. She struggled but always had faith in her Guru, Srila Prabhupada and in Krsna.

My mother always told me, “Krsna sees and hears everything, especially in our hearts. He will reveal Himself in everything and in everyone.” She would say this even though she barely could pay the bills each month. One day, when I was only seven, the Electric Company turned the power off in our home. She went to three churches that night to beg for money so the power would be back on before we returned home from school. Still, she would put aside a weekly dollar in the jar for my dancing dream.

I started working when I was 14 and saved money. I dreamed of moving to India to get my Classical Indian Dance degree and become a successful Kathak dancer. I had a vision and a passion…to share the Pastimes of Krsna through the Classical Arts of India.

Krsna made it happen and I found myself in India, in the school of my dreams! However, when Krsna does one thing, He does so many things at the same time.

That moon-lit evening, my elder sister Caitanya and I were walking along the road near Greater Kailash 1. We had just been shopping and were having fun practicing our Hindi with each other. Caitanya was also singing a new bhajan she learned and I was mesmerized by her beautiful voice.

As we strolled along, we saw a mother cow and her calf near the traffic. Caitanya remarked that the calf was too close to the speeding cars. Just as my sister bent down to nudge the young calf away from danger, the mother cow misunderstanding her motive, pushed Caitanya with full force into the on-coming traffic!

It all happened in a matter of seconds as my sister fell towards the fast moving traffic, I desperately grabbed at her trying to save her. In doing so, I saved my sister, but lost my balance and fell flat into the busy road!

Within 3 or 4 seconds, as if it was a choreographed nightmare, my right foot and ankle were being crushed by the wheel of a car! The hit and run car had stopped briefly but then took off in great haste. It felt like one could hear me screaming in New Dwaraka, where I was born and grew up. For a few seconds, Sri Sri Rukmini and Dwarkadish flashed in my mind.

Screaming with the most excruciating pain, I was horrified to see my dangling foot! My cherished dreams became a living horror! No one would help us… until finally a police car came and hailed an auto rickshaw for us. I guess he didn’t want the blood and gore from my hanging foot in his police car, plus dealing with 2 young American women who were now in a complete hysterical panic!

The nightmare continued with a botched operation at a prestigious hospital in Delhi, for which they took no responsibility….

Anyway, the rest is history that you can read about in my upcoming book, ‘Broken Wing.’ Through my pain and struggle, crying out to Krsna, I learned many incredible lessons.

A team of qualified doctors were convinced I would not walk normally again, what to speak of dance. One of the doctors, whom I had revealed my heart to, told me that my dream as a Kathak dancer was not possible.

After 3 operations, 2 strenuous years of yoga, physiotherapy, a lot of dedication and daily efforts, AND a ton of faith in KRSNA, I graduated from the Kendra with a 3 year degree in Kathak dance! Krsna gave me the ability to become a choreographer and together “we” organized NATYA NECTAR Dance Company. Natya Nectar’s name is quite well known in the Delhi/Bombay Arts n Entertainment Scene.

Now miraculously, we have made it to the SEMI-FINALS of the famous TV Show…India’s Got Talent! Totally KRSNA’s Mercy! We need your mercy to make it to the FINALS! See attached article and photo for voting instructions.
