Kolkata, the Cultural Capital of India, where Srila Prabhuada appeared under the jackfruit tree in 1896. Sri Sri Radha Govinda Mandir was the first ISKCON Temple in India opened personally by Srila Prabhupada in Aug 1970. In May 1971, he installed the first Deities in India, Sriman Mahaprabhu, Sri Radha Govinda. ISKCON’s first Rathyatra in India started here in Kolkata in 1972. Srila Prabhupada unfolded the Life Membership program in Kolkata. He used to stay in a small room located beside the temple hall. Many important decisions were taken there, including the purchase of the first land of Sri Dham Mayapur. We went to the iconic Victoria Memorial for a walk. Victoria Memorial started construction in 1906 and was opened for the public in 1921. Srila Prabhupad loved to walk in the gardens surrounding the memorial. He told that when the construction was going on, as a boy, he climbed to the top of the scaffolding. We also find a few conversations where he wanted to get the Victoria Memorial and instructed his disciples to try. We took a stroll at the famous lake called Rabindra Sarobar. We spent some time in Srila Prabhupada’s birthplace, where the devotees are trying to get much adjacent land to build a wonderful memorial. Also visited the famous Princep Ghat, built in 1841, to catch the sunset by Ganga. Relish these pics of our Kolkata tour.
