3,500 books on their way to 134 prisons across South Africa

Hare Krishna dear devotees
Please accept our humble obeisances, all glories to Srila Prabhupada.

In the month of January 2013, a total of 128 sets of Srila Prabhuapada’s books were delivered to the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) in South Africa. The DCS manages the various rehabilitation programs for the 190,000 prisoners in South Africa. The delivery was made in three batches; first with 41 sets, second with 52 sets and the last with 35 sets (see attached photos). Including the 6 sets that were delivered to the Prisons in Pretoria in 2012, this brings the grand total to 134 sets of Srila Prabhupada’s books that will be placed in 134 prisons across South Africa…this is in excess of 3,500 books.

At that time, the Sastra Dana team was informed that the books will be recorded as assets of the DCS and thereafter dispatched to various libraries across South Africa.

On Monday 18th February, Stephen from the DCS wrote to us with the good news that the first dispatch will be going out to the prisons this week, with the rest of the sets going out in the days to come. This is the final stage of the delivery in getting the books into the prison libraries. See Stephen’s email below.

We are certain that once the prisoners start reading these books, their lives will be transformed and they will start their true rehabilitation – reestablishing their Krishna Consciousness. Consider for a moment the impact this would have on the hardened criminals of this country. Again, we humble thank the wonderful donors whose support and donations made this possible.

With more than 1 billion people in 54 countries across the African continent, the potential for preaching through the thousands of libraries is unlimited. If you would like to support Sastra Dana on a regular basis consider becoming a Patron of the Satra Dana program. Your sponsored books will touch the lives of many readers for years to come.

Apology for delay due to other commitments that registry section had to prioritize to.

Thank you once more for playing a part in reforming our offenders.
