During the Governing Body Commission’s (GBC) meeting on Monday, December 30th, the GBC formally accepted Giriraja Swami’s letter addressed to them, in which he announced that he would no longer be offering initiations. As stated in his letter, dated October 27, 2024: “It will not reasonably be possible for me to guide and care for new disciples as my condition continues to deteriorate.”
The GBC also discussed the implications of Maharaja’s diagnosis of dementia, with strong indications that it is of the Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) type. The GBC decided to establish an interim period during which the Guru Services Committee, the Sannyasa Ministry, and ISKCONResolve will investigate the connection between FTD and Maharaja’s recent out-of-character behavior. They will recommend whether any additional steps need to be taken regarding his services and status within ISKCON.
