by Administrator / 15 Apr 2025 / Published in testing  /

Shaunaka Rishi Das stands as a towering figure in the realm of Hindu studies, interfaith dialogue, and spiritual leadership. As the Founding Director of the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies (OCHS), he has dedicated his life to bridging the gap between academia, spirituality, and global interfaith cooperation, earning widespread recognition for his contributions.

Founding the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies
In 1997, Shaunaka Rishi Das co-founded the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies with a vision to provide Hindu traditions with a scholarly voice on the global stage. Prior to this, theology at Oxford primarily focused on Christian traditions, leaving other religions underrepresented. Collaborating with Professor Keith Ward, Regius Professor of Divinity at Oxford University, Shaunaka laid the groundwork for what would become a world-leading institution in Hindu studies. Under his leadership, the OCHS achieved formal recognition by Oxford University in 2006 and established publishing partnerships with prestigious outlets such as Oxford University Press and Routledge Hindu Studies Series.

The Centre has grown from humble beginnings to become a hub for academic excellence in Hindu studies. It fosters relationships with universities across the USA, Europe, India, and China while cultivating leading experts in academic fields. Shaunaka’s efforts have ensured that Hindu traditions are studied rigorously and represented authentically on a global platform.

Interfaith Leadership
Shaunaka Rishi Das has been a pioneer in promoting interfaith dialogue. His journey began in 1985 when he was introduced to inter-religious dialogue by Rabbi David Rosen at the International Colloquium of Christians and Jews. Since then, he has actively participated in numerous initiatives aimed at fostering understanding among different faiths. He served as Chair of the Northern Ireland Interfaith Forum (1998–2002) and as Trustee of the Interfaith Network UK (2002–2004). His leadership extended to ISKCON’s Interfaith Commission (1997–2010), where he spearheaded consultations that resulted in ISKCON’s groundbreaking interfaith statement.

Shaunaka has also facilitated conferences and symposia promoting Vaishnava-Christian dialogue. His efforts have been instrumental in launching annual Vaishnava-Christian conferences since 1997, creating platforms for meaningful theological exchanges.

Academic Contributions
Shaunaka’s academic contributions are vast and impactful. He is a Visiting Professor at Vrije University in Amsterdam and has acted as a consultant for documentaries on Hindu culture and traditions. He has authored articles for major publications such as The Guardian and The Independent while contributing annually to The Annual Register since 2004.

As a broadcaster, Shaunaka regularly shares insights on Hindu spirituality through programs like “Prayer for the Day” on BBC Radio 4. He also participated in the acclaimed “History of the World in 100 Objects” series broadcast on BBC Radio 4.

Legacy within ISKCON
A devoted member of ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness), Shaunaka Rishi Das has been instrumental in shaping its communications strategy. He inaugurated ISKCON Communications Europe conferences and launched initiatives across European countries to clarify ISKCON’s identity and aims. His self-critical approach helped extricate ISKCON from its public image as a cult, fostering greater acceptance through humility and respect—a principle rooted in Lord Caitanya’s teachings.

Shaunaka also compiled ISKCON’s interfaith statement and inaugurated the ISKCON Communications Journal, which became a valuable resource for theological discourse within the movement.

Global Recognition
Shaunaka’s influence extends beyond academia and ISKCON. In 2013, he was appointed by the Indian government to serve on the International Advisory Council of the Auroville Foundation. He is also a trustee of FaithInvest (UK) and Bhaktivedanta College (Belgium), further solidifying his role as a global advocate for Hindu traditions.

Shaunaka Rishi Das exemplifies leadership rooted in scholarship, spirituality, and humility. Through his work at the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies, his interfaith initiatives, and his contributions to ISKCON, he has created lasting impact across diverse spheres. His dedication to fostering understanding between faiths while advancing academic rigor makes him an inspiring figure whose legacy continues to shape global perceptions of Hinduism and interfaith dialogue.

Shaunaka Rishi Das has made significant contributions to ISKCON Communications, playing a pivotal role in shaping the organization’s public image and fostering interfaith dialogue. His work spans editorial leadership, strategic initiatives, and the creation of groundbreaking frameworks for ISKCON’s engagement with the wider world.

Editorial Leadership
Shaunaka served as the editor-in-chief of the ISKCON Communications Journal (ICJ) from its inception in 1993 until 2006. The journal became a cornerstone for ISKCON’s intellectual and theological discourse, providing a platform for scholarly articles on Vaishnavism, interfaith relations, and religious communication. Although publication paused after Shaunaka stepped down due to his commitments at the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies, the ICJ was revived in 2021, continuing his legacy of thoughtful engagement.

Interfaith Initiatives
As the first Convenor of ISKCON’s Interfaith Commission (1997–2010), Shaunaka led consultations that resulted in ISKCON’s Statement on Relating with People of Faith in God. This document was a groundbreaking achievement, translated into six languages and incorporated into the curriculum at Bhaktivedanta College in Belgium. It provided a theological basis for interfaith dialogue while addressing issues of integration in modern society. The statement was lauded as a pioneering effort by any Hindu tradition to advocate informed engagement with other faiths.

Shaunaka also facilitated annual Vaishnava-Christian conferences starting in 1997, creating platforms for meaningful theological exchanges between ISKCON and Christian communities. These conferences have been instrumental in fostering mutual understanding and respect among diverse religious traditions.

Strategic Contributions
Shaunaka played an essential role in redefining ISKCON’s public image, particularly in Europe. As Chairman of ISKCON Communications Europe from 1991 to 2003, he launched initiatives across European countries to clarify ISKCON’s identity and aims. He worked tirelessly to extricate ISKCON from its misperception as a cult by emphasizing humility and self-critical reflection, principles rooted in Lord Caitanya’s teachings. His approach focused on respecting others without expecting respect in return—a transformative ethos for ISKCON’s communications strategy.

He was a founding member of the ISKCON Studies Institute and remains a trustee of Bhaktivedanta College. His efforts have helped establish connections between ISKCON and leading academic institutions globally, enabling devotees to become experts in their fields while maintaining their spiritual commitments.
