On Tuesday, November 19, at 7:15 pm the American Vedic Association will host our annual Free Pre-Thanksgiving Vegetarian Celebration Feast and I am hoping you will consider joining us!
According to the Vedas, the most befitting diet for mankind to follow is vegetarian. It includes nice food-stuffs like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, sugar, honey and milk as well as all of its wonderful by-products such as butter, yogurt, curd, ice cream and ghee etc. The more research that’s done, the more it becomes evident why the Vegetarian diet is so important. It is also remarkable to consider how it was that the great sages of ancient India knew this fact thousands of years ago! It is also sad and alarming how far we have devolved since then.
Unfortunately many people do not realize how much their dietary choices impact the environment, their health or our collective well-being. Therefore the Pre-Thanksgiving Vegetarian alternative gathering was conceived as a festive way to share this knowledge with others. Those who are ready to rethink their eating habits will discover that this program is a great place to learn how to eat in a way that is better for the environment, their health, and a more congenial world.
I am very pleased to announce that this year our program will be led by an extraordinarily talented professional musician called Govinda Datta prabhu. Govinda Datta became and initiated member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness thirty years ago. He was already a professional musician at that time and has since learned both the philosophy of Krishna Consciousness as well as the art of Harinama Kirtan. (The melodious chanting of God’s Holy name). Because of Govinda Datta’s first class Vaishnava training, he is emerging as one of the very few bonafide professional kirtan leaders in the world today. His music is actually capable of penetrating the stone hearted nature of the conditioned living entity and it has the potency to restore ones lost relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead Lord Sri Krishna.
Govinda Datta is now carving out his own musical genera that is unique and penetrating. His style has been compared to the “Prince of Motown”. Marvin Gaye captured the soul of the 60’s and his music reflected the struggles of the inner city. In a similar way Govinda Data addresses the quandary of the conditioned soul trapped in the material world. His music has the ability to uplift the soul of those who are paying attention with divine hope and grace.

Marvin Gaye asked “What’s going on” and pleaded: “…Oh you got to find a way.” Govinda Dattas responds with songs that explain our human predicament and leads the way with his earnest renditions of the Hare Krishna mantra. Devotees know that the sincere chanting of the Maha mantra by Krishna’s devotee is the yuga dharma for everyone ensnared in this era of Kali yuga and the only effective way to lift the soul out of it.
