Bhakta Piyush: Will We Create A Rift/Schism? Make a Bridge.
Hare Krishna. With reference to the many articles that have been posted and discussed on the issue of ISKCON officially accepting “Female Diksa Gurus” several questions have arisen. These are genuine questions and observations and I hope that no-one is offended as this is not the intent of this article.
The following is one of the first questions that come to mind, I hope it is formulated properly. Since the issue of FDG is a very controversial one with very polarized views on both sides – Will this create a schism if officially passed between the opposing parties?
I will try to expand and clarify the above question and offer a possible bridge. This is in no way an imposition but just a suggestion. There have already been some very heavy exchanges and resistance from both sides, therefore a danger of splitting the society along these lines is a reality.
Devotees may be met with discomfort, objections or even worse, derision and contempt by other members of the society – it is an unfortunate reality. This will not be a very ideal situation and could be a cause of many unwanted offenses. The point above brings in the question of acceptance in dealing with this controversial issue from both parties; the only present course may be for the authorities to enforce rules upon the society. The rift will deepen and cause a split with existing opposing parties segregating even further.
Considering that we need to respect ISKCON’s Siksha gurus – those who exhibit outstanding characteristics of siksha preaching should be honored with a title whether they are female or male bodied, therefore if some system of recognition can be given for such preachers it will be a great boost, this system can run parallel to the diksha system. The system can allow disciples to choose a primary siksha leader. The siksha leaders may be entitled wear a certain ceremonial dress, sash, chadar or broach (or any such similar identifying status) and have officially recognized status by ISKCON. The siksha leader may also nominate an existing official presently practicing diksha guru, of their choice, in good standing within ISKCON, to act as proxy, together with blessings and wholehearted cooperation from all parties involved in the care and protection of ISKCON members.
A diksha guru can also nominate a primary siksha leader to take care of a group of disciples in a particular area. Such arrangements are already in place but are not official. Making it official can increase the sense of responsibility of a larger group and increase the frequency and volume of preaching.
Again separate special status is required so that they, the siksha gurus, can be recognized, given due respect and conversely not disrespected.
This could satisfy both parties…
In the ancient Vedic traditions women were held in high esteem, often gurus had wives who were respectfully called guru-mata. They were offered as much respect as the guru. The guru-mata or wife of the guru was also a siksha guru, and in no way shape or form were they ever disrespected. In general women as a whole were respected.
We should automatically have a system where all devotees irrespective of their status should be respected as Vaishnavas, until that time we need to at least NOT disrespect each other. On a side issue such a recognizable emblem should also be conferred on Srila Prabhupada disciples so that they receive due respect at all centers.
Your servant,
Bhakta Piyush
