Celebrating Lord Krishna’s Birthday party in the City
Festival this Sunday 17th August,
12pm-6pm in Town Hall Square, Leicester City Centre
6pm-Midnight at ISKCON Leicester, 31 Granby Street, Leicester, LE1 6EP
Lord Krishna’s birthday is to be celebrated for the first time in Leicester City Centre.
People from all over Leicestershire will come together to celebrate Shri Krishna Janmasthami, the biggest birthday party of the year, at a joint festival in Town Hall Square and the new temple on Leicester’s Granby Street.
As part of Leicester City Council’s City Festival, Town Hall Square will be transformed with displays, demonstrations of Vedic culture, children’s activities, and a lively stage show.
Inside the temple, festivities will continue up till midnight, with mantra meditation, temple dance, and drama. Devotees will perform a grand abhishek–bathing ceremony of the deity of Krishna. ISKCON Leicester is currently the only temple in Leicester who observes the festival through to midnight—the time of Lord Krishna’s descent into this world, over 5000 years ago.
“It is a momentous occasion to finally celebrate one of our biggest festivals in our new home four years after the devastating fire which destroyed our former temple in North Evington,” says Temple President Pradyumna Das. “It is a great pleasure to share this spiritual culture with the people of Leicester.”
