Relief From Material Distress

People everywhere are working hard to avoid misery; but distress is not to be stopped by any material adjustment.

All suffering comes from reactions to sinful activities, and people commit sinful activities only out of ignorance.

These sinful reactions are described in scripture as occurring in various stages: the seed stage, the sprouting stage, and the fully ripe stage. There are even subtle sinful reactions that have not yet reached the seed stage.

These sinful reactions are unlimited and even after repeated lifetimes they are not diminished. The Jagannatha Astakam says that we face a “shoreless ocean of sins.” (JA, 8)

Bhakti dries up this ocean of sins and situates one in perfect knowledge.

Rupa Goswami says therefore, that pure devotional service brings relief from all material distress and he encourages us to take it up.
