From time immemorial, the great disease of the living entity has been forgetfulness of the Supreme Lord, and the consequent thinking that we ourselves are the center of all enjoyment. In order to facilitate our folly, we are allowed to enter into a virtual reality (or Maya), where our attempts at enjoyment are repeatedly defeated by old age, disease and death. At times in our planet’s history, this near indomitable and insatiable spirit for sense enjoyment has been personified in great demons such as Ravana, Hiranyakashipu, Hiranyaksha, Kamsa, and their cohorts. These ungodly personages wreaked untold havoc, which is mirrored in today’s society by modern demons of much less stature. But true to His own promise in the Bhagavad-Gita 4:7 “yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati bharata abhyutthanam adharmasya tadatmanam srjamy aham”, Supreme Lord Himself descends when there is a rise in irreligion. The Lord annihilates the demoniac, and reestablishes dharma. The celebration of the descent of Sri Krishna at the dawn of Kali Yuga, which eventually led to an epic battle with the great demon Kamsa, is precisely what Sri Krishna Janmastami is.
Because we are eternal servants of the Lord, He gives us an opportunity to abandon this path of failed enjoyment adinfinitum , and return to our original home; thus in Bhagavad-Gita 4:9 the Supreme promises by His own mouth “janma karma ca me divyam evaà yo vetti tattvataù tyaktvä dehaà punar janma naiti mäm eti so ’rjuna.” If we understand the transcendental nature of His appearance and activities, we do not take birth again in this world, but we attain the Lord’s eternal abode.
