They were in aristocratic positions and rejected it all to come live in Vrindavana, wearing one cloth, living under a tree, and maybe eating once a day. The comforts of opulent life was not at all what they aspired for. They had it all and rejected it. More importantly, they gave a treasure to the world in the form of transcendental writings.
