Woman as Soul–Woman as Scripture: Theology of Love in Hindu Mysticism and Art (video)
“The theistic devotional (bhakti) traditions in Hinduism have produced numerous sophisticated theological treatises on the nature of divinity, and bhakti scriptures have revealed in prose and poetry its rich theological visions. But such traditions have found that certain aspects of its theological visions can be best expressed through artistic renderings. This lecture focuses on the ways in which feminine power comes into play in Krishna bhakti theology and how this power is uniquely expressed in a theo-aesthetics that takes the practitioner beyond word and sound. Specifically, the exquisite visuals of Indian miniature and Western contemporary painting of the divine feminine will be presented and analyzed in order to reveal this deeper theo-aesthetic dimension of Krishna bhakti.”
