Leadership And Relationships

H. H. Radhanath Swami:

[Extract from lecture]

“What disturbed Prabhupada more than anything, and he was disturbed when devotees would fall down, But there was one thing that disturbed him even more than his disciples falling down, the thing that he said was breaking his head, [was] when his leaders were fighting.

That was the most painful thing, when he would hear about conflict with the leaders [and] argumentation with the leaders.

There is no possibility of common devotees getting along if leaders are fighting, if leaders are not respecting each other, and that respect has to come from the heart.

It’s not just formerly making a show, at least you should formerly make a show, it’s better than fighting, at least do that, that’s a sign of sincerity.

But from that heart, that means we are understanding; what pleases Krishna, what pleases guru. That is all important.

When we see there is a relationship problem, especially between the leaders, the leaders should actually focus on resolving that.

And, that takes a lot of forgiveness, a lot of tolerance, forbearance and sincerity, because in this world, Kali Yuga, very difficult. What are the two symptoms of kali? Quarrel and hypocrisy .

That’s the age. That propensity is there everywhere, if you don’t want it to be there, there’s nothing you can do except wait till Kalki avatar comes. It’s like being in Bombay and thinking ‘there won’t be any rain this year’. Or being in London and thinking there will be no clouds.

It’s the season.

It’s the season of quarrel and hypocrisy, and we have to counteract that. Wherever we see relationship problems, especially among leaders, we should understand, this is serious.

‘This is a disease not only for me but for the whole movement.’

And we should make and effort, a concerted effort, to try to restore that relationship, or develop that relationship.

And, in order to do that, there has to be forgiveness, tolerance, willingness to adjust, and willingness, to put the higher principle above the temporary passion that we are undergoing. “
