VṚṢABHOTSAVAM GLOBAL
Festival Honoring Vṛṣabha, our Father Bull
VṚṢABHOTSAVAM, the great festival honoring our father bull.
According to Maharishi Paraashara in his treatise Krishi Paraashara that delineates the science of Vedic agriculture, one should honor our father bull on the first day of Kartika, i.e. the first day of Damodara Masa known as Laguda Pratipada.
Our father bull, in Sanskrit Vṛṣabha, is the emblem and the basis of Dharma, the protector of religious principles. Without bulls, there can be no progeny, no cows. Without cows, there can be no villages, and without villages there can be no food.
Let us enthusiastically celebrate this festival of VṚṢABHOTSAVAM by remembering and glorifying our father bull who helps sustain the whole universe. Before being taken on a grand procession in the village the bulls are honored by smearing their horns with pure ghee and by decorating their body and covering them with auspicious signs using turmeric powder.
In addition, on this most auspicious day of VṚṢABHOTSAVAM, let us also remember the farmers who serve and protect the bulls and their progeny. With the help of Father Bull our farmers till the land and produce our food. The noblest profession known to mankind is agriculture, farming. Farmers should be remembered on this day, honored and rewarded for their selfless service to father bull.
Please let us celebrate this grand festival on the first day of Kartika, the first day of Damodara Masa. For Vaisnavas, the date this year will be October 14th. For those following other Indian calendars the festival well be celebrated on October 29th.
In this momentous hour of need, let us join hands to help restore the principles of Dharma.
