AFFCAP has developed in reaction to some goshallas falling short in their cow protection responsibilities. Some have gone so far as to allow animals to meet their end on a killing floor, or to pass away neglected on the street.
India is the world’s largest exporter of meat and ranks first in world leather production. As such, AFFCAP’s purpose is to ensure that no ‘protected’ cows, bulls, oxen or calves, from a cow protection goshalla, will meet such an horrific end.
As a result, AFFCAP’s inspection and certification program is designed to provide standardization of goshalla programs throughout India — with a goal of providing assurance to the public-at-large — that the inspected goshallas are indeed dedicated to the animals’ lifetime protection.

Very, very nice apart from most important. btw India the biggest exporter of meat? Can you substantiate that with numbers since that is completely new to me. And it would really be tragical of course when the land of dharma and bhakti has fallen to this horrible position.
from The USDA Livestock and Poultry: World Markets and Trade
“Beef and Veal 2014 forecast overview : Global production {what a word!} for 2014 is forecast up marginally at 58.6 million tons….Global consumption is forecast slightly above last year’s record at 57 million tons….exports are forecast at 9.2 million tons, expanding 24% in just 5 years, with Brazil and India accounting for most of that growth.” {So, apparently people are eating more meat than ever}
In India:
“Strong demands for dairy products encourages continued expansion of the bovine herd….as a result, the herd is forecast to grow 1% to almost 330 million head. While a larger herd supports an increase in beef production (5% to a record of nearly 4.0 million tons), government programs also encourage production….The Salvaging and Rearing of Male Buffalo Calves Scheme…and the Utilization of Fallen Animals.”
In India, according to this usda report, “beef” exports are projected to reach a record high in 2014 of “nearly 1.8 million tons, accounting for about 20% of world trade.”
Only some of this “beef” is cow bodies. Most of the “tons” of dead bodies are, apparently, buffalo.
I am not certain what is referred to …apart from most important. I don’t have the article in front of me but I think the Times of India article is well referenced. His numbers are backed up by a FAO study I read as well. It isn’t a question of when India has fallen to this horrible position, it already has. These numbers are current.
Hare Krishna,
