Bhakta Piyush: Dear Devotees,
Pamho, AGTSP
It its often seen that images of the Lord, Srila Prabhupada and other devotional paraphernalia are strewn about the Temple campus and surrounds. I often wonder about whether this is appropriate and what to do about this? We are taught that the Lords Name, Form and Pastimes are non different, so..?
One day I fished out of a garbage can a 2014 calendar with the images of Sri Sri Radha Madhava where we were all throwing our kichari leaf plates, worship of the Deities going on at the same time.
Where there is fire there will be smoke? Familiarity breeds contempt? Attention to detail is a sign of love? Personal or impersonal? Be practical? Which one to apply?
After the ILS meetings posters of Krishna and Prabhupada were left lying upside down on the side of the road visible to all. Till date there are some posters from the festival lying here and there. Attached pictures are current and have been in this state for many days. Heads must roll? No, but a little eye rolling/roaming may be required.
When we revere or hold someone dear we might not appreciate seeing their forms lying in a neglected state. What image does this give our visiting guests? I recall an incident at another ISKCON centre where a visiting member of the public became furious on seeing the Lords form on incense packs which are often thrown away after use. Here comes a difficult question are we “showing the Deity” for money?
To balance I have heard cases where distributed books have been fished out of garbage cans and other odd places which ended up making devotees, so preaching is a priority. At the same time, it does not harm to be a little more careful.
