The varnas are created, as confirmed by Krishna Himself, by Krishna’s arrangement, according to the work performed in the 3 gunas. Srila Prabhupada intended to encourage self-sufficient communities in terms of livelihood and work. Srila Prabhupada had commented that this pertains to both devotees and non-devotees. The urban lifestyle is not natural, and has become a consequence of the industrial age of the Kali yuga. Not only Srila Prabhupada, but many analysts and futurists believe that the urban lifestyle will collapse sooner or later. This will bring about havoc and harm to many, many people. Of course, in terms of Krishna conscious development, SIMPLE LIVING AND HIGH THINKING is promoted.

The ashrama system is designed for progressive detachment from material self-centered inclinations. It is designed for the spiritual purification of the individuals. While the ashramas can take place within the context of the agrarian setting, there is a tendency for detachment and separation from sense-enjoying society by the brahmacharies, vanaprasthas, and sannyasis. Thus, for the purposes of educating and stimulating self-sufficient communities, the varnas can be promoted somewhat independently. Still, the purpose for the Krishna bhaktas would be to encourage places to gather for Krishna katha, just as the Amish have their churches local to their farming communities. One important feature of the varna model as described by Krishna is that cow-protection is one of the roles of the vaisyas.
