Question: “Why does Vishnu have four arms and Krsna two arms?”

by Administrator / 1 Oct 2008 / Published in Message Board  /

Gauragopala dasa: Hare Krishna Prabhus. All glorious to Srila Prabhupada.

Just a humble question my Doctor asked me today that the Vaishnava writers on Dandavats can hopefully answer –

“Why does Vishnu and His dear servants in Vaikuntha have four arms and why does Krishna and His intimate associates have two arms in Goloka Vrndavana?”

My good Doctor visits the Dandavats website regularly and reads many articles on Krishna Consciousness, can someone please answer this for him on Dandavats as I am sure others would like to also read the answer?

Is there any Shastric answer to this question?

Sincerely, your fallen servant Gauragopala dasa

The Form of Lord Vishnu and the Form of Lord Krishna are eternally existing. This is not an anthropomorphic fairy tale. Lord VIshnu with His regal transcendental crown and adornments clearly announces in the depths of the jiva soul, that here is God Personified.
The residents of Vaikunthat also have four arms, and have different colored transcendental bodies, some white, some red, some green, some yellow, some blue…all with four arms, long transcendental fine hair, golden transcendental dress, and all are effulgent. There is no tinge of matter in their transcendental bodies.
Krishna on the other hand, His beautiful broad ever-youthful face and wide smile, reddhish transcendental beautiful eyes, dainty head-dress, transcendental pearls down the sides of his gorgeous blackish-blue all-attractive face…announces “I am your dearmost Friend, Lover, Child. I am the reservoir of all ecstatic relationships that you are longing to enjoy eternally. You are Mine, and I am yours.” Krishna’s Form and Color, etc. seem foreign to us in our mundane state of consciousness. When we will be awakened by Krishna, there will be no shred of doubt that we are Home. Krishna is most Familiar to the transcendentally fortunate bhaktas. There will be no doubt, only ecstatic overflowing prema…anandam budhivardanam.
Sometimes, when Srila Prabhupad would be asked similar questions about the Form or, for example, “Why is Krishna blue?” His Divine Grace would reply, “I do not know. You can ask Him when you see Him.”
I also am a doctor, and a bhakta. What I have shared with you today was not, however, realized in medical school. We need the Causeless Mercy of Shri Krishna, we need the shelter of Sri Guru Vaishnava. All things, repeat All things, will be made known to us when Krishna Wills it. Like the chakora bird analogy, we may aspire to drink in what will come from the divine, avoiding the earthly matter. We will allow our eyes to be smeared with the salve of transcendental knowledge by our beloved Gurudeva. And, if blessed with good fortune, our faith will deepen profoundly, crowding out all doubts forever.

Thank you Pusta Krishna Prabhu, you have knowledgeably answered my Doctor’s inquirers that I also found instructive. Undoubtedly you’re ‘personal’ preaching is scholarly based and my Doctor was impressed. You have helped implant some very important seeds of Krsna Consciousness within his heart.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and realizations.

I have just read an inspiring post from Praghosa Prabhu that is applicable here and would like to add that PustaKrishna Prabhu’s preaching is also inspiring to so many who visit Dandavats

Praghosa Prabhu writes – “Does a person become a devotee by doing many conversions?”

Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura said that the position of a Vaisnava can be tested by seeing how good a touchstone he is—that is, by seeing how many Vaisnavas he has made during his life. A Vaisnava should be a touchstone so that he can convert others to Vaisnavism by his preaching CC Madhya Lila 24. 277

Hari Bol, Prabhupada’s Books are the basis and preaching is the essence.
