In booking a hall for a Ranganiketan tour in the U.S. in 2006, I discovered that some of the best venues (such as Stanford University’s Dinkelspiel Auditorium) require as much as two-years advanced planning.

For this particular university venue, which sends out program brochures of their season’s shows months in advance, one must first obtain support of a member of the university faculty (which is usually easy to do for Ranganiketan because the Manipuri style of Indian classical dance is rarely seen and is well respected by the professors in university dance departments.)

The benefits of being in such a hall are numerous. It is a prestigious location, and there is a “regular” audience who gets the University’s advertisements (which means less marketing headachjes and expenses). By being part of the university’s regular season events, a certain kind of potential ticket-buyers who might not think to go out of their way to attend such a performence will be reached.

I am glad to hear Ranganiketan is up and running, and humbly request Ajit Prabhu to advise when the troupe will be able to return to the San Francisco Bay Area. If I have enough lead time I will try to book them at Dinkelspiel in Stanford and to get enough promotion out there to fill the theatre.
