Coming soon doomsday, do not miss it, a once in a life time chance JANUARY 15th 2010
By Janananda Maharaja
Even if we happen to be Brahma which we probably aren’t, very soon is an event we can’t afford to miss. It only happens once in Brahma’s day. Are we just going to let it pass by like any other day? We hear a lot of talk about the predicted doomsday on the 21st Dec, 2012 but nothing much about this other date. What is this date we are missing? Well believe it or not, very soon is the 500th anniversary of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s acceptance of sannyasa. Yes – This is the real doom for material civilization. Mahaprabhu appeared to save the world from the hell bent course of material life and thus he took sannyasa to spread the holy names in every town and village and break the jaws of the crocodile of kali. To be precise the day is January 15th 2010 (check your calendar, as it varies a bit from place to place). January the 15th happens to be a solar eclipse. It’s the annual Ganga Sagara Mela, when throngs of pilgrims assemble at the confluence of the Ganga and the Bay of Bengal. It is also amavasya, the new moon and makara sankranti, the time when the sun enters into its northern course (uttarayana). Sankranthi means begin journey. Makara- Capricorn . It is considered one of the most auspicious days of the year. This is the month of magha or Madhava masa. It’s a very auspicious time, especially for spiritual things. Good day to take sannyasa if you’re thinking about it – that is preferably if you are on the list. Whatever ashram we’re in, the real business is to chant and spread the holy names, so let’s make that our business. Without this then sannyasa is just an external dress and name. The responsibility of a sannyasi is specifically to spread the holy names and that is precisely what Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu did after taking sannyasa. Why not all over the world a great celebration be held, to honour the yuga avatara who introduced the yuga dharma. In Mayapura – you can read about it on the Mayapura website- they are planning a pretty big celebration lasting weeks with parikrama all the way to Jagannatha Puri, following Lord Caitanya’s route after he took sannyasa. Because it’s an eclipse, they are starting on the 14th of January and going through till mid February sometime. At least we can make a few days affair in all of our centres around the world in honour of the Yuga Avatara, the most magnanimous form of Godhead. Maybe Thursday Friday Saturday and Sunday the 14-17th January. This is a really significant event and a great chance to further inform the world as to who is Lord Caitanya. A great time to again focus on His mission. As the external purpose of His appearance was to propagate the chanting of the holy names it is only natural we should focus on that. Public kirtana in various places. We could have floats of Lord Caitanya and or Panca Tattva.
Palanquins – whatever is possible to glorify the Yuga Avatara and chant the holy names. Mass distribution of literature about Lord Caitanya . There are so many ingenious ways to capitalise on the opportunity. We’ll hopefully hear more about the details soon. I suggest we not wait for others, but start planning something now before it is too late and it’s over. Before we know it 2012 will be here and then what? And if you take the hype about 2012 as a reality don’t waste your time thinking about how to save your body and where to be. It won’t help. Better save the soul and other souls. Don’t worry we’ve had at least a dozen 2012’s in the last fifty and as far I know we’re still here. You have been warned!

I would like to thank you for your nice article, Maharaja.
I am inspired enough to want to take sannyasa myself on that day if the devotees will let me.
You will be interested to know, if you don’t already Maha Kumbha mela is taking place in Haridvara-Hrsikesha at that time and 60 million will be coming to gather together.
That would be an ideal time to preach Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s message there then.
And don’t forget 27th July to 12th August London 2012 four billion people will be watching. Another good opportunity to preach the Lord’s message.
Krsna’s slowly bringing the whole planet together, by the mercy of the devotees.
Hare Krishna!
Which one is better – to go to Vrindavan or to have a big harinam?
January 16th will also be my birthday and I am extremely excited for it!

Whatever one does…if it is self-centric, ie for one’s own pleasure, rather than for sacrificing for Krishna, it is inferior. Therefore, if one is going to Vrindaban to associate with and hear from bhaktas, or if one goes on Sankirtan (Sankirtan yajna)…the yajna aspect is the most important. I too am approaching 60 years old this February 2010, and I am also thinking whether to do something special. So these matters are also on my mind, and I shall try to heed my own advice…for my sake.
Krishna is the reservoir of pleasure, the focus for all relationships or rasas, and we shall never be fully satisfied without relationship with Krishna, and acceptance by Krishna. May you find peace and joy on your birthday. Pusta Krishna das
