By the GBCAs taught by Srila Prabhupada, the etiquette of not initiating in the presence of one's diksa-guru will be upheld in ISKCON. However historical precedents also teach us that disciples may sometimes, in exceptional cases, initiate in the physical presence of their diksa-gurus. The GBC clarifies that an individual devotee taking up the service of diksa-guru in the physical presence of their guru may be allowed as an exception when the following conditions are met.

By Chaitanya Charan dasDraupadi. Her admirable character is revealed in the most humiliating incident of her life â her disrobing by the wicked Dushasana. Though victimized in body, she refuses to be victimized in her heart. Her exceptional character transforms the lowest point in her life into the highest point. The incident in which she is the most dishonored, she emerges as the most honorable. On that dark day, her period has just ended and she has emerged after bathing, wearing a single cloth before she puts on her royal dress as the chief queen of the reigning monarch. Unknown to ...

By Nikunja Vilasini DasiI grew up thinking that I had to be the bestâin the classroom, in extramural activities, and in everything elseâto be successful in life. Although I excelled in most of what l did and was at the top of my class, the unimaginable day came when a new boy joined my class, and I became second best. This was my first lesson in recognising that no matter how materially accomplished I may become, there will always be someone better, someone ahead, someone wiser an...

By Subhag SwamiFaith is not bhakti but is a very important part of bhakti. The Cambridge dictionary defines âfaithâ as, "a great trust or confidence in something or someone." ĆrÄ«la PrabhupÄda has explained that "faith means unflinching trust in something sublime" (Bhagavad-gÄ«tÄ 2.41, purport). He further explained, "Faith means firm conviction that if I become transcendentally engaged in the service of the Lord, then my life becomes successful. This is called faith. And that conviction must be firm, not tottering faith" (Initiation of Bali-mardana DÄsa -- Montreal, July 29, 1968).

By Radhanath SwamiWhen you advance in Krishna Consciousness, it is more difficult to tolerate being honored than to tolerate being dishonored. The world will appreciate you if you give time to Maya and devotees will appreciate you if you give time to Krishna. So you decide whom to serve. Fighting against Maya is a blissful thing in the world. For a non-devotee, Maya convinces not to surrender unto Krishna. But for a devotee, she convinces to postpone the surrender. The happiness of the material world also disturbs us because it makes us forget Krishna. There is enough happiness ...

His buffalo-horn bugle is named Mandraghosa and His flute is named Bhuvanamohini. By Vishakha Devi DasiTrue love is not casual but is an act of will that requires the loverâs concentration on and commitment to the beloved (in Sanskrit called asakta-manah â "mind attached"). In other words, love is about my beloved'sâand not my ownâthoughts, feelings, and desires. True love is selfless. One who would love is concerned with and alert to the beloved in every sphere of life. In fact, one who would love sees everything in relation to the beloved and sees the beloved everywhere. This does n...

By Radhanath SwamiIn Italy, near the city of Perugia, is the place called Assisi, the birth place of a very popular saint named Francis. He was the son of a wealthy merchant, but he took up the life of renunciation. Committed to a life of self-imposed poverty, humility, and devotion, he attracted many to follow. âOne day he was walking with one brother Leo from Perugia to a very famous temple, St. Maria of the Angel. He was walking for miles and miles, and it was freezing cold. It was raining and snowing. He asked his brother Leo, âI want you to write down whatever I say.â They were...

By ISKCON GBC Strategic Planning TeamâOne day I became aware of the door being opened, and I turned to see Srila Prabhupadaâs lotus feet walking into that closet room. . . . He placed his hand on my head and inquired, âYamuna? How are you doing?â Firstly I said, âI am always thinking of you, Srila Prabhupada.â Then I explained my symptoms, and he said, âI think this is jaundice . . . Now I will take charge of your recovery. You will never get well in these conditions on the floor.â

By Sacinandana SwamiThe devotees suggested to Chaitanya Mahaprabhu that He lead them in kirtana, and this is what He did. He started the sankirtana movement, which gave expression to His motto: âWhere is Krishna? Where is Krishna?â In Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita (Antya-lila 17.60â61), this mood of Sri Chaitanya is revealed: âAlas! Where is Krishna, the treasure of My life? Where is the lotus-eyed one? Alas! Where is the divine ocean of all transcendental qualities? Alas! Where is the beautiful blackish yout...

By Mahatma dasYes, association of the pure devotees and sadhus and chanting Hare Krishna are the most important practices. But the point is that if a sufficient level of intensity to become Krishna conscious is not there, no one would do the practice. Good food is healthy, but itâs only healthy if you can digest it. Our eagerness to be Krishna conscious is our digestive power. If one develops this laulyam, or excessive eagerness for meeting and serving the Lord in a particular way, that is the price to enter i...

By Indra Krishna DasaI think of Lord Krishnaâs answer to Brahma prayers: âO Brahma, whatever appears to be of any value, if it is without relation to Me, has no reality. Know it as My illusory energy, that reflection which appears to be in darkness.â (Srimad-Bhagavatam 2.9.34) What is the relationship of all these things to the Lord, I wonder? Do these people at all believe in His omnipotence? Everything I see is the illusory energy of the Lord.

By Nikunja Vilasini Devi DasiJust as Narada had guided Dhruva, Srila Prabhupada encouraged people to serve God, thus delivering the remedy for their unsatisfied hearts. Whether they were full of material desires, just curious, or seeking genuine spiritual cultivation, the practice of bhakti-yoga â the means to rekindle oneâs love for Krishna â gave them lasting happiness and satisfaction. Serious practitioners were able to give up their bad habits and addictions. Having received a valuable jewel, they lost...

By Sankirtana DasPrabhupada wrote and spoke millions and millions of words that are now accessible to anyone and everyone. Sometimes devotees quote a sentence or two from Prabhupada but donât necessarily look to examine the context of what is being expressed. Were the words from a purport in one of his books? Is it a lecture, conversation, or a letter that is being quoted? Who were the words spoken to? What was Prabhupadaâs intention in speaking the words? Were his words straightforward and obvious, or was there a deeper meaning? Or maybe it was both.

By Giriraj SwamiSri Gopala Gosvami was the son of Venkata Bhatta, a resident of Sri Rangam. Gopala Bhatta formerly belonged to the disciplic succession of the Ramanuja-sampradaya but later became part of the Gaudiya-sampradaya. In the year 1433 Sakabda (A.D. 1511), when Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu was touring South India, He stayed for four months during the period of Caturmasya at the house of Venkata Bhatta, who then got the opportunity to serve the Lord to his heartâs content. Gopala Bhatta also got the opportunity to serve the Lord at this time. Sri Gopala Bhatta Gosvami was later initiated by his uncle...

By His Divine Grace Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami PrabhupadaThe animal part of a human being necessarily require food to eat, shelter to live in, protection from fear and gratification of senses. These four principles of life are common both to the man and the animals. The atheistic civilization is to be troubled more and m...

By Jivan Mukta DasaWhen a family adheres to a spiritual program and cooperates to manage the household, the burden of stress and frustration is lightened. A disciplined devotional routine creates a more gentle flow to family life and an atmosphere where Krsna consciousness can flourish. We should regulate our play, rest, exercise, and worship in a way that will help us develop our attitude of service toward guru and Krsna. Although following a sadhana program as strictly at home as one would in a temple may be a challenge, we can stick to a modified program. Your schedule may prevent you f...

By Subhag SwamiKrishna can see everything inside our heart. Even though we may be listening Hari Katha, it is plainly obvious to Krishna whether we do so out of eagerness or an obligation. So we should ask ourselves, âAre we relishing Krishna Consciousness?â When we chant more do we feel like chanting more? Does our absorption in hearing Hari Katha give rise to such profoundness that we forget to take Prasadam? If yes, then we are advancing spiritually, without any doubt. If it is oneâs genuine experience that âYes. I am relishing Hari Katha, topics about Hari,â then that is the higher taste.

By Shyamasundar DasWell, this was Prabhupadaâs, Bhaktivedanta Swamiâs formula for action. He always said... If youâve ever read Bhagavad-gita, on the battlefield where Arjuna is asking Krishna, the Supreme Person, âWhat should I do?â Krishna gives him the blueprint for action, that our actions should be for God and to aim for the highest thing, the best thing, the most powerful thing you can do for Him in your service. So thatâs the theme.
