The Pune temple used to be considered a branch of the Chowpatti temple. Well, now it is a many-branched tree of dedicated Vaisnavas. The Pune temple almost doubled the Chowpatti temple’s score, with 19,708 book points and a 405% increase of its monthly average, and it was the number-four temple in the world for book distribution in July. Along with this great news, in January of 2013, there will be the grand opening of the new temple building in Pune.
Who were the top two temples? Well, we know by now that they were Mayapur and New Delhi, the standing champs in book distribution for years, outstanding examples for the rest of ISKCON. But who was number three? It wasn’t a large or a medium temple. Actually, it wasn’t a temple at all, but a traveling sankirtan team of brahmacaris known as the RVC traveling sankirtan party. They did an astounding 21,494 book points. This team consists of about eight devotees who are in a samadhi of book distribution. They live and breathe the distribution of books.
Now, for a nice little experience I recently had: The universities are open again, so I’m distributing there. These places have become sacrificial arenas, since so many books have been distributed at them. I distributed one to a student who was interested in finding out what I had presented to him.
The next day he came to my table and said, “This book you gave me is amazing, I was reading it for hours last night. Let me show you what I really liked.”
Then he opened the Bhagavad-gita to where Krsna says ajo pi san avyayatma “Although I am unborn and My transendental body never deteriorates I still appear in every millinium in My original transendental form.”
“This is so cool, God is kind.”
Then he went on to show me yada yada hi dharmasya. He was showing me the verses, and expressing so much appreciation so I thought maybe he’s not reading the purports. So I asked him whether he was reading the purports.
He said, “Oh, yeah, this person is such a great writer. Usually spiritual books are kind of boring, but this is like a novel. It’s so interesting.”

I always like looking at the historical “Worldwide Book Distribution – Total Literatures Distributed” graph.
It looks like from 2003 onward we have been on a longer, more gentle upslope, with 2011 the best year in total distribution than any year since 1997.
The fact that the current upslope includes big gains in book distribution in India makes me feel that the current trajectory, though still lower in absolute numbers than the peak years in 1976-78, 1981-85, and 1990-96, is more stable and steady, based on a broader worldwide “footprint”, and may be poised to gradually surpass even those years as total distribution continues to rise steadily year over year for many years to come.
There may still be largely “supply side” factors at work (motivation and organization of Sankirtan parties), but there are also “demand side” factors such as a gradual interest in these books awakening among various populations throughout the world.
In addition, there are new methods of book distribution such as weekend warriors, smart boxes, full-set distribution, Motel Gita (and other sastra dan), and other channels for distribution. New translations are helping us reach new international markets, too.
As the number of books going out increases, we should also see a steady rise in the number of devotees coming in to ISKCON and becoming at least part-time distributors.
With 2.8 million total worldwide literatures year-to-date, I am hopeful that an intensified effort and a big year-end season could combine to help us break the 8 million in 2012, for the first time in over 15 years, and go on to bigger increases in 2013 and 2014.
