Paul McCartney tells Dalai Lama he’s wrong to eat meat

From celebitchy.com

Paul McCartney has written a personal letter to His Holiness The Dalai Lama, the spiritual and political leader of Tibetan Buddhism, urging him not to eat meat. Buddhists believe in reincarnation and in compassion for all living beings. One of the five precepts of Buddhism is “do not kill,” which is explained “One must not deliberately kill any living creatures, either by committing the act oneself, instructing others to kill, or approving of or participating in act of killing.” Buddhism does allow for personal choice and exceptions when it comes to the precepts, and they are not set in stone, but many Buddhists interpret that precept as a call to vegetarianism.

Norway’s Army Tries To Save The World… By Going Vegetarian

(From Huffington Post)

The Norwegian military said Tuesday it plans to put its troops on a vegetarian diet once a week in a bid to fight a new kind of enemy — climate change.

The army said its new meatless Mondays are meant to cut its consumption of ecologically unfriendly foods whose production contributes heavily to global warming.

“It’s a step to protect our climate. The idea is to serve food that’s respectful of the environment,” spokesman Eystein Kvarving told AFP.

The diet has already been introduced at one of Norway’s main bases and will soon be rolled out to all units, including those serving overseas, said the army, estimating it would cut its meat consumption by 150 tonnes per year.

Does doing yoga make you a Hindu?

The Surya Namaskar or Sun Saltutations

From the BBC

For many people, the main concern in a yoga class is whether they are breathing correctly or their legs are aligned. But for others, there are lingering doubts about whether they should be there at all, or whether they are betraying their religion.

“Yoga is such a broad term – that’s what causes a difficulty,” says Rebecca Ffrench, the co-founder YogaLondon – a yoga teacher academy – and the philosophy tutor at the school.

There are different forms of yoga, she says, some of which are more overtly religious than others. Hare Krishna monks, for example, are adherents of bhakti yoga, the yoga of devotion. What most people in the West think of as yoga is properly known as hatha yoga – a path towards enlightenment that focuses on building physical and mental strength.

It is interesting that the Dalai Lama claims in his autobiography, Freedom in Exile, that he must eat meat for health reasons. He doesn’t describe what disease he has; probably because there is no disease where meat-eating is a requirement.

Anyway, his own official website says that the Dalai Lama is a vegetarian in his home base, Dharmsala, yet is “not necessarily a vegetarian elsewhere”. So if he needs to eat meat for health, why is he a vegetarian when he is home at Dharmsala? Won’t he get sick?

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, when the Dalai Lama visited Milwaukee for a luncheon, the Dalai Lama was very fond of the veal roast. If he cannot control himself, if he loves to eat meat, why does he have to eat veal (baby cows), probably the most cruel of foods?
