Lecture:

So, from today, we will hear about Gauranga Mahaprabhu, because day after tomorrow we will be celebrating the appearance day of Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu. So, last few years we are discussing about the different reasons for appearing of Krishna or Gauranga Mahaprabhu. Krishna is Gauranga Mahaprabhu, in this material world. We have discussed that how Gauranga Mahaprabhu appeared on the external reasons,

“anarpita-carim cirat karunayavatirnah kalau

samarpayitum unnatojjvala-rasam sva-bhakti-sriyam” (cc Adi chapter 1 text 4)

that he came to distribute nama and prema for the benefit of living entities in this material world. And there is internal reason also. Krishna came as Gauranga Mahaprabhu to fulfill his three unfulfilled desires.

“sri-radhayah pranaya-mahima kidrso vanayaiva

svadyo yenadbuta-madhurima kidrso va madiyah

saukhyam casya mad-anubhavatah kidrsam”

Three desires he wanted to fulfil for whose purpose he appeared as Gauranga Mahaprabhu, to understand the greatness of love of Radharani. And the second reason is what is the sweetness she is relishing from me, and the third reason is what kind of pleasure she is deriving. These are two reasons, external and internal reasons. But there is another, Super reason very specific reason that Caitanya Mahaprabhu spg Parameshwar Bhagavan Krishna came as Gauranga Mahaprabhu and prior to his appearance Madavendra Puri came. Because when Mahaprabhu or Krishna comes, “Sri Krishna Caitanya Prabhu jibe daya kari”, he comes along with his associates and dhama. Bhagavan does not come to this material world, He comes along with his Dham, abode and His associates.

He first sends the senior personalities, like father, mother and His spiritual spiritual master come first. And in this way Madhavendra Puri appeared in the line of Madhavacharya, Brahma Madhava Gaudiya samprayaday. And he introduced something prior to the appearance of Caitanya Mahaprabhu that Mahaprabhu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He manifested that mood to full extent. So in this regard, We will read the verse from Caintanya Caritamrita.

Madhavendra Puri at the time of his departure from the material world, His divine grace Madhavendra Puri, the spiritual master of the entire world, thus distributed ecstatic love for Krishna while passing away from the material world he chanted the following verse. We chant this verse, based on this, we will discuss today a specific topic the topic is Krishna separation with Krishna. We know Krishna in separation with Radharani, but today we will discuss Krishna in separation from Krishna. In this regard, we will hear Caitanya Caitamrita, anyta lila chapter 8 verse 34. In the black board.

Verse:

ayi dīna-dayārdra nātha he

mathurā-nātha kadāvalokyase

hṛdayaḿ tvad-aloka-kātaraḿ

dayita bhrāmyati kiḿ karomy aham

TRANSLATION

“O My Lord! O most merciful master! O master of Mathurā! When shall I see You again? Because of My not seeing You, My agitated heart has become unsteady. O most beloved one, what shall I do now?”

Lecture:

In this verse, Madhavendra Puri is saying “dayita bhrāmyati kim karomy aham”, please tell me dayita, my dear, oh most beloved one, I am completely bhramyat, I am overwhelmed. Please tell me, what shall I do now? I don’t see you, and I am agitated by it now. So, this way Madhavendra Puri, by this verse, he instructed very specific things here. “Asloke Krishna prema”, in this verse Mahaprabhu teaches how to achieve love for Krishna specially, by feeling of separation from Krishna one becomes spiritually situated. This is called separation. I told today we will discuss Krishna in separation of Krishna.

So, Bhagavatam says

vadanti tat .. vadanti tat ,

tattva vid that who have understood the absolute truth the non-dual absolute truth in three different ways perceived by yogis, brameti pramatmeti bhagavan iti sabdayate. The brahman effulgence of Supreme Personality of Godhead, realized by jnanis that’s one aspect, paramattma realized by yogis in their heart is another aspect, then bhagavan realized by Bhakta or devotee is another aspect. So, what is the brahma aspect? Brahman is the aspect of the absolute truth, in which no energy or variegated of energy has not manifested, that is brahman. That’s the lowest level of absolute truth where the energy level has not manifested, that is the brahman concept of the absolute truth.

Nirakar brahma, he will get Ananda but not brahmananda, it is nothing but the absence of suffering. The next aspect is paramattma, partial manifestation, for the yogis they realize paramattma within their heart. They have some sort of reciprocation. What is their reciprocation? They can see the paramattma that’s it, not beyond that. Jnanis, brahman realization, they do not see anything, just jyoti or efflulgence. Yogis they see something but all they can do is just see that’s it. They see the paramattma, but the paramattma will not speak to them, paramattma will not smile with them, paramattma will not come and do handshake with them, no. That’s what paramattma realization. Beyond that is bhagavan realisation, where one has opportunity, we can see Bhagavan we can speak with him, we can reciprocate with him, we can hand shake with him.

So there in this special relationship between bhakta and bhagavan, between devotee and the Lord. Understanding Bhagavan as Vishnu, and understanding bhagavan as Krishna are two different things. When you understand Vishnu, there is lot of awe and reverence, it is aiswarya bhava, there is love but love covered with opulence and when one understand Krishna then that is also love, but love, madhurya, love with sweetness at least at this level the living entities can develop loving relationship with absolute truth. The bhagavan aspect of the non-dual Brahma.

The loving relationship, there are two ways one is sambhav and another is vipralamba. Sambhav means union and vipralamba means separation. Union and separation, devotee enjoy engaging in devotional service unto his lovable object, that’s union. When that lovable object God, becomes separated from devotee that is Viraha, separation or Vipralamba.

So, Mahaprabhu, that Supreme Personality of Godhead Krishna He is parambrahma prameshwar, He appeared in two forms. One as Jagannath, and another as Gauranga. And what is Jagannath? Jagannath form of Krishna is, Krishna in separation from Radharani. When Krishna is deeply mediating, that he has been separed from Radharani, meditating on the love of Radharani, love of vrajavasi, He manifested in the form of Jagannath. When the same Krishna he wanted to enjoy how Radharani, what is her feeling, what she is going through when she is separated from Krishna, as I told you this viraha, is the highest level in the kingdom of loving affairs. The separation is higher than union, I will explain to you why it is higher.

So, when the Lord is coming to relish how his devotees are enjoying by rendering service unto Him. That is the reason He accepted the mood of Srimati Radharani. “Radha bhava lalitam Navami krsna swarupam”, to understand what is her feeling, Krishna tried His best how she is enjoying, but He could not. So finally he decided only if he accept her bhava, in this way “tat bhavatya samad”, He accepted that mood of Radharani, That Krishna Chandra, the moon like Krishna, He appeared from the ocean from the womb of mother Saci as Gaura Chandra.

So, they are, he is going to release the top most level of loving affairs. The top most level of loving affairs released through separation. So, that is difference Jagannath and Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Jagannath – Krishna in separation from Radharani and Caitanya Mahaprabhu, is Krishna in separation from Krishan. So, long before Caitanya Mahaprabhu appearance, in some kalpa, Ramachandra came in Modrumadvip. And if you have done Navadvip mandal parikrama, you will know. How many of you have done Navadvip mandal parikrama? So many, so you know.

She must have heard how Ramachandra came sitting under a big Banyan tree and mother Sita was stringing the flower, making flower garland. Ramachandra sitting on a stone, and looking the beauty of the Navadvip and he is smiling. Sita devi asked what is the happening, why do you smile for nothing? Why are you smiling. Ramachandra said, I am smiling because this is Navadvip dham. In kaliyug I will appear here, and now I am wandering from forest to forest now, but when I come in Kaliyug I will be wandering also but from village to village. The difference is now I am wandering with you, with my wife. But that time, I will not wander with my wife. I will take sanyas, my mother will cry, my wife will cry. Sitadevi said, if you know you will take sanyas, why will marry then, you shouldn’t marry then. Why to make your mother to cry, your wife to cry, you shouldn’t marry. Why you want to give hard time, so close to you, your wife your mother why do you want to give so much hard time to them?

Ramachandra then revealed the importance of separation. The Lord Ramachandra said, yes, I offer this opportunity to my devotee to be separated from me, because my devotee, they enjoy. They derive so much pleasure when they are in union with me rendering service, but when they are separated from me, that become more intensely united with me. As Prabhupada was saying, wife serving her husband, she is very happy, but when husband goes far distance, wife’s attachment increases to her husband. Very deeply meditating, the relationship become more intense. Secondly Lord Ramachandra was saying that after separation when my devotees are again re-united with me that derive thousand times more pleasure than they are united with me before separation.

So, that secret is there, so this is viraha separation is integral part of loving relationship because that brings you to the lovable object more close more intensely connected and also that gives much more pleasure to you when you get re-united with lovable object. That pleasure you derive is more before separation. This way Lord Ramachandra explained that this life, I will worship your golden form and when I come as Gauranga, in Kaliyuga, I will go away and you will worship my golden form in separation from me. But he did not disclose everything, that one day when you will be rescued from Ravana, that I will exile you to the forest, all these details he did not tell. He did not tell, I will send you to forest.

So, in this way Lord Ramachandra, revealed this separation subject, topic of separation, viraha vipralamba. So, lord Krishna came as Gauranga adopting that mood of Srimati Radharani. So, when Gauranga came, initially Gauranga Mahaprabhu was not so much into bhakti or devotion. Because, earlier part of life he was enjoying vidhyarasa, the mellows of education. He is very scholarly personality, 11 years old he had his own school and he defeated greatest scholarly personality, Dig vijay pandit, Keshava Kashmiri. He is more into logic, grammar and things like that. He would enjoy more into defeating others so much so that when Nimbarka Acharya met Mahaprabhu in Seemantha dwip, Mahaprabhu told him in kaliyug you will come as Keshava Kashmiri and I will enjoy defeating you. I will defeat you, enjoying vidhya rasa. Not into Bhakti so much because not with the group of devotees in Navadvip. In Navadvip, devotees are suffering like anything because kali worshippers are dominating. Muslims are ruling, muslims are against bhakti, more than muslim, Hindus are against Bhakti, more than Hindus, Brahmanas are more against bhakti. So, this was the situation when Mahaprabhu came. But he known as very scholarly personality.

Devotees won’t go close to Nimai Pandit because Nimai Pandi meet devotee, unnecessarily argue, bring logic and defeat. (Sri sri Radha madhava ki Jai). But devotees are not interested. They wold avoid Nimai as much as possible. It has been described, if Nimai coming on street, Mukunda or some devotee see, then Oh Nimai coming then they will go take some other path, they don’t want to face Nimai. See waste of time, talking to this boy no use that was how Nimai was.

Then Nimai, when his father left body, Jagannath Misra, So the Nimai Visvambar he went for offering Shraddha to his father in Gaya. Gaya is a place very famous among all Hindus. The eldest son of the family must go once in his life to give pinda dhana, shraddha ceremony, because there the lotus feet of Vishnu. There was this demon Gayasur. Gayasur, Lord Vishnu came personally and put a stone on him, He did not kill him, he put a stone on him and by his right feet he pushed him down. That direct foot print of Lord Vishnu, delivered if you do sraddha ceremony there in Gaya. So, all Hindus believed their ancestors will be delivered if they do Shraddha ceremony. Mahaprabhu, though Supreme Personality of Godhead, he was following all rules and regulations, all conventional rules and regulations, so Mahaprabhu went to Gaya.

That time there is no train or bus. It would take months to go to Gaya. Then when Mahaprabhu came back, so all Navadvip vasis they ran to see that Nimai has come back. That time if somebody completes tirtha yatra and come back it is a big achievement. In four dhams, Badrinath, Dwarakanath, Rameshwar, Jagannath Puri, most famous. That time some people would go for this tirtha yatra, and they come back, they have done great things, because there is no chance they will come back, they will die somewhere on the way. Yes, so much so there is a rule before you start your journey, before you go, you do your shraddha ceremony, because there is less chance you come back. Therefore, they do their shraddha ceremony before they start the journey.

So, when Nimai came back, everybody so enthusiastic they all came to see Nimai. Not many vaishnavaas came. Sriman Pandit and only one or two came because Vaishanvas are not interested in Nimai Pandit, he is with different group. So, then Sriman Pandit has come, and few devotees and many Navadvip people. So Mahaprabhu was saying, many were asking so how was the tirtha yatra? How is your journey? Then Nimai describing, how he went to so many village so many fields. Finally at one point, he went to this Vishnu temple, thousands of Brahmana chanting vedic mantra, counshell are blowing then, when I entered into the temple, so many brahmanas called me, come, come see, look at this Vishnu padothagam.

As soon as Mahaprabhu said Vishnu padothagam, his voice chocked he couldn’t speak anymore. Simply tears are rolling down from his eyes. And all kinds of symptoms of prema bhakti manifested. Sriman Pandit was very surprised, what happened to Nimai, he is such a stubborn, wicked and naughty boy, now looks so humble, what happened to him in Gaya? Mahaprabhu crying and crying and crying whole courtyard got filled with water. So much like ganga and Yamuna flowing.

Then Mahaprabhu told, all other people you go away from here. Sriman, you stay here. Then Mahaprabhu crying and crying and telling, I want to reveal my tale of sorrow, what suffering I am going through. But I don’t know whom to speak whom to speak whom to reveal that what suffering I am going through. Sriman Pandit, you do me a favour, tomorrow tell the vaishanvas, he mentioned few names also, Srivas Pandit and few others tell them to come to house of Suklambara Brahmacari. Suklambara Brahmacari is very poor person, he is such a poor person he used to live by begging alms from house to house, his small kutir cottage in bank of river ganga , Mahaprabhu told you ask all Vaishnavas to gather there, so I will reveal my heart to what suffering I am going through.

So Sriman Pandit left and Mahaprabhu was engaged doing his house hold activities not understanding what he is doing. He doesn’t know how he is taking bath, how he is sleeping how is he eating then next day morning, in Srivas thakur’s courtyard there is a flower, kunta flower, a kalpavriksha, all vaishanvas they come to Srivas Thakurs houe to pluck flowers and then they do Krishan Kathta. That day Sriman Padit came little late to pluck flowers. Then Srivas Thakur was asking, oh Sriman, what happened you look very happy to today you are very jubilant. Then Sriman Pandit said, yes not only I am happy if I tell you, you all will be happy. So, what happened? See yesterday Nimai Pandit came back, everybody were going to see him, out of curiosity I went to see him. But he is not the same Nimai. He is completely different Nimai, he is not canchal not flickering any more no more naughtiness, so sober and so many symptoms of prema manifesting he is crying ,crying and crying. And all Vaishnavas are very happy, very nice, very nice. Such a big pandit will come to our group then we will become more powerful. Because all these kali worshippers giving us hard time. If Nimai comes to our group, we are very happy. Then vaishanvas say we will chop of the head of all Kali worshippers if Nimai comes and joins our group.They were very happy this man will be in our group. Sriman Pandit said Nimai has said all of you, he requested all Vaishanavas ,to gather in Suklambara Brahmacaris house, then he will reveal his heart to you.

Then that day noon time, before noon, Vaishnavas have gathered. Gaddadar Pandit also came to know, he was most surprised because he is very intimate friend of Gauranga Nimai they are very good friends but very opposite nature. Gaddadar is very humble ,very sober, very Krishna bhakta but Nimai has all opposite qualities. Gaddadar was thinking what he will talk what type of sorrow he will reveal so all Vaishnavas came to Suklambara Brahmachari’s house all were waiting at one point they were all sitting in the courtyard of Suklambara Brahmachari through the gate they could see the tall Nimai, very beautiful body like champaka flower and he has garlands long hair, brahman thread, so attractive, is entering. All Vaishnavas waiting to hear he will speak. So as soon as Nimai entered. So, at that time the cottage know, it is not building, all bamboo pillars. So Nimai saw all these Vaishnavas, so by seeing those Vaishnavas he chanted a verse glorifying how great Vaishnavas are and when he is glorifying Vaishnavas he was saying ha Krishna ha Krishna he caught hold the bamboo pillar and he is so heavy the bamboo pillar fell on the ground.

Crying and crying and crying all the Vaishnavas, without understanding anything they also fell on the ground and all crying, they didn’t understand anything. He has not started speaking everybody crying and crying and after sometime, Mahaprabhu became unconscious. Then when he came to consciousness, then he could hear somebody else inside the house also crying. So, that time mother Ganga feeling so much ecstasy, big waves coming from mother ganga, the devotee are crying, Mahaprabhu crying, he could hear somebody crying inside. Mahaprabhu asked who is inside? The devotee said that’s your dear friend Gaddadar and Mahaprabhu went personally. Gaddadar Pandit put his head down and crying, ganga Yamuna flowing from his eyes also. Everybody crying, so Mahaprabhu revealing, what is your suffering,

Mahaprabhu said, I went to Gaya I saw that lotus feet of Vishnu Padapadma and I took imitation from Ishwara Puripad and on the way back in Kanainatasala , there is a place on the border of Jharkhand and Bengal there is a place, beautiful mountain on the bank of Ganga and the ganga is so wide, that you can’t see other side of Ganga other swarup ganga. One side mountain and the other side ganga very beautiful place, nice forest. Now ISKCON has occupied the temple and are developing. Sometimes we should go that is the birth place of Krishna viraha bhav that Mahaprabhu got.Then Mahaprabhu said when I came to Kanainatasala I saw one blue boy, “Kanai natasala namaika gram gaya hoite hasite dekino stan” On the way back from Gaya, I reached a place called Kanainatashala, then what I saw, I will read it. Very beautiful description.

Tamala shyamala eka balaka sundar. Tamal shyamala, very blue and beautiful boy I saw tamala shyamala eka balaka sundar,” His face is covered with beautiful curled hairs , on top of that curled hairs very wonderful peacock features beautifying him. Jalmala manigana…so dazzling I could nto seeing him directly. Hathathe moila vamsihi parama sundara carana nupura, and he was holding mohana vamsi he was holding a beautiful flute which has capacity of bewildering everybody carane nupura, and ankle bell at his feet was looking very nice. Nilacal ..ratna alankar..srivas kastura…. Nilacampa..bhuje he has hands which defies the beauty of blue pillars and that hand was decorated with so nice ornaments and the sirvasa kastuba mani was decorating his chest what can I describe about the cloth he was wearing ki kayibo sebitha , that yellow colour cloth he was wearing what can I describe about that. Makara kunda sabe kamala nayana. His ears, earing was hanging and kamala nayana, beautiful lotus eyes. What that boy did. I saw that boy in Kanainatasala, he came close, close and more close to me “amara samipaya hasite hasite with very beautiful smiling face he approached me, and he became very close to me he embraced me, he embraced and then disappeared and ran away in some direction.

So Mahaprabhu, was describing this when he was describing. Mahaprabhu while he is describing he fainted saying ha Krishna ha Krishna “kota hala kaile say murali badan”, where shall I go, I can see that beautiful blue boy holding his flute on his lips. Saying these things, he was breathing very heavily, and he was crying and this way Mahaprabhu revealed that what the suffering he was going through. His suffering is separated from Krishna. Gaddadar, you are so fortunate from your childhood you are worshipping Krishna, but most of my life I wasted, not worshipping Krishna but finally I got Krishna, but I lost Krishna.

So, when Mahaprabhu came back from Gaya developing this mood of separation, which originated at Kanainatashala, and his behaviour is completely different. Whole night he cannot sleep, and he sometimes cry, sometimes laughs, sometimes he screams “sei moi sei moi” I am that, I am that, I will kill everybody. Always non-devotees were there know. At one moment he would laugh, one moment he would cry, and one moment he would faint. That time Lakshmi Priya was his wife, he has not married Vishnu priay but Lakshmi priya. Lakshi priya, he would beat Lakshmi Priya she will hide and run away. Saci mata is very happy, that after so long my son has come back but what happened to him, he his completely different personality now he is behaving in a very different way. Then saci mata out of affection, because her husband has died, so many daughters died and elder son has taken sanyas and only one son he has. She knows only affection to Gauranga she is saying, I don’t know what happens sometimes he speaks to himself also, some time he screams, I will kill everybody, I will kill everybody, sometimes he climbs on the tree. Sometimes he close his eyes lies down Krishna viraha symptoms he manifested in Navadvip pastimes.

Sometimes he would bite his teeth, like this with kat kat sound, sometimes he jumps, and do not speak anything and for hours he will be doing like this. People had not seen somebody doing like this, they are seeing people they come to see what has happened with Nimai they see all this behaviour, Oh! we know what s the problem he has too much gas in his stomach. These are symptoms of too much gas in his stomach. All you have to do is to tie him tightly bind him, suckle him otherwise you can’t control, mother saci. Saci mata describing my son doing all these after coming from Gaya then people they come and see and he say It’s too much gas, laugh and go away.

Then some people they come yes yes Nimai had this problem before also too much gas on his stomach, may be that problem has come back again. Saci mata poor lady what can she do very innocent lady, so all you have to do is to tie both leg. Imagine if Saci mata would do what will happen tie both leg, keep in house and do some treatment to him, His gas has to be reduced. Let him drink some green coconut water somebody would advise. Saci mata very innocent lady, she will give lot of coconut water to Mahaprabhu. Then somebody will come and say it’s a serious disease with ordinary medicine it will not be cured. Give him a special ghee, and somebody will say, no no boil this oil and put on this head so all kinds of things, he is not free from gas all these mental problems he has. What Saci mata can do whatever people are saying she is doing.

One day Srivas Pandit came to see what is going on what has happened to Nimai. Then saci mata called Srivas, can you come and see what has happened to my Nimai? So Srivas Pandit came, and Mahaprabhu immediately got up offered obeisance to Srivas Pandit. Then by seeing Srivas Pandit, he was great devotee, all ashta sathvik vikars got manifested 8 manifestation of Prema in Mahaprabhu. He was doing tulasi prathakshana at that time. But as soon as he saw Srivas Thakur, Mahaprabhu fainted there. When he came to external consciousness, crying, crying and crying like anything and trembling like anything. This wonderful symptoms Srivas Thakur saw. Why people are telling he is suffering from too much gas? This is symptom of maha prema.

Then Mahaprabhu came to external consciousness, then Mahaprabhu asking Srivas Pandit, oh Srivas Pandit what do you think what has happened to me, people are thinking I have so much gas. They are telling to bind me, they are doing all kind of treatment to me, Pandit, what do you think about me? Is it true I have so much gas?

Oh, very good disease you have,, I am hankering if I can get little bit of that disease from you. I want that disease, Nimai I can see, the symptom of great prema. You are blessed by Krishna in this way Srivas Thakur explained to Him, You don’t worry you just come to my house. All will spend time chanting and dancing. From that day Mahaprabhu started spending most of his time in Srivas House but mother saci was very worried, he doesn’t sleep at night time, bite his teeth. One day came after Srivas Thakur counsel still she was very unhappy.

Then one day Gaddadar came when Mahaprabhu faint and faint and when he came to external consciousness, as soon as he came to external consciousness he catch hold of the, grab the devotees neck, and cry, cry and cry. Always he will say Kotha Krishna Kotha Krishan. One day Gaddadar came, Mahaprabhu at that time was chanting kota Krishna kota krishna , whoever anybody ask not answering asking everybody kota Krishna kota Krishna. So one day Gaddadar came with some betal nut, Mahaprabhu asking Gaddadar where is my Krishna where is my Krishna in a very uncontrolled way, where is that blue boy wearing that yellow cloth, the eagerness he was exhibiting so that the heart will crack into pieces how to speak how to answer.

To just to pacify him Gaddadar said oh Nimai, why are you worried, don’t you know Krishna is within our heart? Oh really is it? Krishna is within my heart really?, that’s it he became scratching his heart with the nail, then Gaddadar became more worried I wanted to pacify him but now he is scratching his heart. He caught hold of Mahaprabhu’s hand hey don’t scratch your heart. He had to pacify Mahaprabhu, Hey wait a minute wait a minute Krishna has gone for grazing the cows in few minutes he will come back. the Mahaprabhu cooled down. Gaddadar told like this and Mahaprabhu cooled down.

Saci mata watching everything, what’s going on. She was very surprised, I have been trying to cool down Nimai, but not able to, but this small boy how expertl is he. He could pacify Nimai.
