Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
I have just watched the video of the devotees chanting with Nando Reis and the crowd’s overwhelming response. It is miraculous. The potency of the holy names and the devotees’ sincerity combined with the famous musician has created a tidal wave of bliss. It is so inspiring. Please continue to flood the world with this wonderful chanting. All glories to the sankirtana devotees in Brazil!
Hoping this finds you in the best of health.
Your servant,
Danavir Goswami
PS. Allow me to share a purport I have written today: The verse is from Sri Garga Samhita, Second Canto, Chapter 9 (translated by HG Kusakratha Prabhu) entitled Brahma’s Prayers. It takes place after Brahma stole the calves and cowherd boys and Krishna expanded Himself to replace them—Brahma is speaking.
Text 13
vaktais caturbhis tv aham eva devah
sri-pancavaktrah kila panca-vaktraih
sahasrasirsas tu sahasra-vaktrair
yam stauti sevam kurute ca tasya
Ananta praises Him [Krishna] with a thousand mouths, Siva with five mouths and I with four mouths. We serve Lord Hari.
PURPORT
There are songs chanted occasionally by Vaisnavas as follows:
Brahma bole catur-mukhe
Krsna krsna hare hare
Mahadeva panca-mukhe
Rama rama hare hare
Or another version by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura in his work “Sri Nama, Song 7, verse 3” reads:
e nam siva jape panca-mukhe re
(madhur e harinam)
e nam brahma jape catur-mukhe re
(madhur e harinam)
The meaning of both songs is the same:
Lord Brahma chants the maha mantra, Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare with his four mouths and Lord Siva chants the maha mantra with his five mouths. They find these names of God so sweet that they are never satiated. Brahma is famous as having four heads, one for each direction and Lord Siva sometimes exhibits five heads.
There is an expression used several times in the famous biographical epic called Sri Caitanya Caritamrta which refers to “speaking as if one has five mouths.”
haridasera guna sabe kahe panca-mukhe
Everyone there began to speak of Haridasa Thakura’s great qualities as if they had mouths. (Antya 3.175)
dui sloka kahi’ prabhura haila maha-sukha
nija-bhaktera guna kahe hana panca-mukha
When Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu recited the two important verses, He felt great pleasure; thus, as if He had five mouths, He began to praise His devotee. (Antya 1.105)
Ananta sesa is the expansion of Sankarsana in the form of a divine naga snake with one thousand hoods and each mouth glorifies Lord Krsna constantly. Chanting the Lord holy names is so relishable that even if one has a thousand tongues, he will find it ever increasingly enjoyable.
In a a seven-act play called Vidagdha-madhava (1.15), Srila Rupa Gosvami writes:
tunde tandavini ratim vitanute tundavali-labdhaye
karna-kroda-kadambini ghatayate karnarbudebhyah sprham
cetah-prangana-sangini vijayate sarvendriyanam krtim
no jane janita kiyadbhir amrtaih krsneti varna-dvayi
“I do not know how much nectar the two syllables ‘Krs-na’ have produced. When the holy name of Krsna is chanted, it appears to dance within the mouth. We then desire many, many mouths. When that name enters the holes of the ears, we desire many millions of ears. And when the holy name dances in the courtyard of the heart, it conquers the activities of the mind, and therefore all the senses become inert.”
Anyone who tries the chanting of Hare Krsna will experience its transcendentally pleasing effect, even today. To prove this, I would like to tell the readers of a video I viewed last night that showed Hare Krsna devotees chanting with a famous musician onstage a very large, fully-attended music hall in Brazil. The audience was comprised of ordinary persons who were not devotees of Krsna yet they became so ecstatic as the chanting progressed that the the entire hall erupted in a unison of singing, dancing, roaring and clapping which was scarcely conceivable.
All Glories to Sri Guru and Gauranga!
